Daily Inspiration: Meet Jeffrey Fletcher

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jeffrey Fletcher.

Hi Jeffrey, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am a San Antonio based digital photographer specializing in urban, landscape and contemporary imagery. I spent my formative years living throughout the United States as one of four children of Tyrone and Doris Fletcher. My father was an Army officer who fought in the Viet Nam War, and was an avid photographer. Armed with his Pentax K1000 35mm camera, he would frequently send home images of life in Viet Nam. These photos would spark my early interest in photography and travel. After high school, I attended Florida A&M University, studying Broadcast Journalism. Although I excelled academically, I knew in my heart that the life of a journalist was not the career I wanted to pursue. After graduating, I followed in the footsteps of his father, joining the Army and spending the next 30 years in assignments that afforded me the opportunity to travel across the globe.

I settled in San Antonio in 2016, and just received my BFA in Digital Photography from the Art Institute in San Antonio. I started JFletch Photography LLC in 2018, and plan to continue to develop as a photographer with the ultimate goal of selling and showing my work across the country. I am a member of the Professional Photographers of America and the Texas Photographic Society.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
I would say the biggest obstacle I faced was an internal one. When I retired from the Army, I had the opportunity to work in the corporate sector. But just as I recognized in college, I knew this (working in the corporate sector) wasn’t something I really wanted to do. I needed to find something that I really loved to do and afforded me the opportunity to be my own boss. Photography answered both of those needs. So I really had to go with my gut, and follow a different path. Going back to school and being older than most of my instructors was a little strange at first, but it was the best decision I’ve made in a long time. The faculty, staff, and students at the Art Institute in San Antonio are the reason I’ve seen my photography go from amateur to professional quality. My brother Michael, who is a self taught photographer, and the faculty, staff, and students at the Art Institute in San Antonio, are the reasons I’ve seen my photography go from amateur to professional quality. Because of them, I’ve been able to finally fulfill some of my lifelong goals.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
