Today we’d like to introduce you to Faith D. Cox.
Hi Faith D., thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
My literary journey began with a fourth grade writing assignment. That story developed a love of writing that has stayed with me through the years even while working outside the home, homeschooling children, and opening an after-school tutoring business for public, private, and homeschool students.
I have written poetry, children’s manuscripts, a middle grade manuscript, and Christian women’s fiction, young adult, romance, and tragedy. My first two short stories I wrote, women’s fiction and young adult, were chosen and included in two anthologies by two different publishers. I am currently pursuing publication for more of my works.
I am also a produced screenwriter. I write feature and short screenplays and have received multiple awards with feature screenplays including Semi-finalist and Quarter-finalist awards along with “Best Role for a Leading Woman,” “Best Ensemble Cast,” and “Humanitarian” awards. My debut short film, “You’ll Remember Me,” received eight Gold awards, “Best Christian Micro Short Film Award,” “Exceptional Film Award,” and nominated for “Most Inspirational Award,” The 6-minute film garnered over 20,000 views on YouTube within its first year. I have also been blessed to be on “The Hot 100 List” for screenwriters both years I submitted scripts, 2023 and 2024. Another script was awarded with “Top 100 Screenplays of the Year and One of the Best Scripts to Read!”
I have received many encouraging feedback remarks from professional contests and critiques such as, “The characters are vivid and the concept is brimming with drama and themes worth discussing. This was clearly a script meant to stick with the audience after it concludes, and the strength of the story will make sure this succeeds.” Another one is, “The narrative’s complex and layered connection between Jonah and Tessa goes beyond the surface and challenges both the characters and the audience’s expectations.”
Whether it’s as an author or a screenwriter, I write thoughtful, heartwarming, family-friendly works to encourage, inspire, and entertain through laughter and tears. With quirkiness and sincerity, I create and bring relatable characters to life.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I have been very blessed with many awards and positive feedback, but the road has also been bumpy along the way. When I began writing many years ago, there weren’t many avenues to get into doors and get noticed. Internet was not a thing. A back injury disrupted my administrative assistant/bookkeeping job and put my life on hold, with an excruciating amount of pain. After almost a year of being at home, mostly bedridden, I began homeschooling my own, and other, children. As the word spread, others requested tutoring services for their children, and my after-school tutoring business began. My days were filled educating and teaching the next generations in reading, writing, and math. I encouraged students to follow their dreams.
Now, there are more “so-called” options to contact publishing and production companies, but many of the doors remain tightly closed or money is required through networking sites to “pitch” your screenplays to agents, directors, and producers. Dollars can disappear quickly through these “training sites” with a limited amount of screenwriters finding the success they desire. Many agents, directors, and producers won’t consider you unless you go through one of these sites. Another hurdle in the industry is that currently there are more writers than in the past years and less original stories being sought after and filmed with a common trend being film remakes.
I also know there are fewer in the professional realm searching for the deeper, thought-provoking, family-friendly genres I write, but I believe there is an audience yearning for these original, heartwarming, family-friendly stories I write. I just haven’t discovered the right connections yet to get my works to those readers and viewers. I have written screenplays for 25 years and began manuscripts earlier with some years drawn away with the busyness and unexpected journeys of life. The open doors to get my works published and produced aren’t always easily visible. However, I love to write, encourage, and inspire. Whether my works get noticed quickly or not, or even in my lifetime, I have been called to write. I will continue putting words on paper with the hopes and dreams of being able to share the stories with others to encourage, inspire and entertain through laughter and tears.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a Christian, Gold award-winning screenwriter and author. I write drama and romantic comedy original, family-friendly, heartwarming works to encourage, inspire, and entertain. I have stories that have been published and produced.
I write drama and romantic comedy screenplays and have received many awards including multiple placements as Semi-finalist and Quarter-finalist in a variety of contests. I have screenplays that have been nominated for “Best Role for a Leading Woman,” “Best Ensemble Cast,” and “Humanitarian” Awards. I have placed on “The Hot 100 List” two years in a row and “Top 100 Screenplays of the Year and One of the Best Scripts to Read!”
My drama debut short film, “You’ll Remember Me,” received eight Gold awards including one Gold award for screenwriter. The film also received awards for “Exceptional Film Award” and “Best Christian Micro Short Film Award.” It was also nominated for “Most Inspirational Award.” It garnered over 20,000 YouTube views in its first year.
I have had feature scripts in shopping agreements and have written a screenplay for a producer upon request. I currently am represented by Beverly J. Brock of Eagles Wings Entertainment/The Brock Agency, Inc.
I write screenplays and manuscripts. Many writers do one or the other, but not usually both. Another thing that sets me apart from others in the field is that I write a variety of manuscripts: children’s, middle grade, young adult, women’s fiction, romance, and tragedy. Many will say you must choose one genre and concentrate on doing it well. I have been called to write in multiple genres. I research and learn to continually improve my skills. I do my best and have been blessed to receive awards, requests, productions, publications, and representation.
How do you think about luck?
Life has given me ups and downs, and God has been with me through it all. I have had both wonderful times and have suffered greatly. I have been blessed with a loving husband and two top-notch daughters to share life with, but I have also grieved losses and disappointments in life.
Through these positive and negative life moments, they have created a heart of understanding, compassion, and determination which helps create unique, heartwarming stories of love, encouragement, and inspiration with quirky and endearing characters.
