Today we’d like to introduce you to Eva Marengo Sanchez.
Hi Eva, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Rainey Rodriguez invited me to join Bee Nation which was an after school art program She ran at Southwest school of Art when I was in high school and that’s where I learned and fell in love with oil paint as a medium.
After college, I ended up taking art history and drawing classes at Alamo colleges and those were pivotal parts of my development. I also worked for Andy and Yvette Benavides at 1906 where I learned the importance of presentation (an in the difference a good frame makes and how art is hung) and how to take my art seriously. They eventually gave me a show at their gallery,SMART gallery, which is what started my career.
That show was really successful and from that, more and increasingly bigger opportunities were presented to me.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
To be honest, I have been incredibly lucky and supported in this career. My family and godmother have always supported and believed in me and I have been offered a lot of opportunities that I really wasn’t qualified for, but someone believed in me, I said yes before I could talk myself out of it and then rose to the occasion.
It has helped that I take my work extremely seriously and put a lot of pressure on myself to never disrespect an good opportunity by not giving it everything I have
I have sensory sensitivity, I’m very dyslexic and ADD and living in a world built for Neurotypical people, meant that I was sort of resigned to the fact that life would always feel like squeezing into clothes two sizes too small and you can’t take off.
The fact that I’ve gotten to do the thing I’m best at and build a life that fits me, is more than I expected or thought was possible for me.
Figuring out how to stay sane when I’ve tied the thing I’ve always done for my sanity to my income requires constant work.
Another unexpected hard part is that I find myself running a small business and all the jobs that come along with that.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a painter (primarily oil) and muralist. I paint still lives, mostly objects from around the home and I paint them in a realistic style.
I’m interested in human behavior, who we are and who we think we are. I love the idea that the objects we collect are this objective, physical pieces of evidence of what our lives actually look like. where we live and how.
There’s an implication that the things we encounter most frequently are less important be they’re common, but I think those are the most sacred because they defined our actual lived experience.
My paintings are meditations on the things I see most frequently and that feel important because they tell the story of what life looks like. I paint them with dramatic lighting, and vibrant color which is meant to express how I feel about the story, rather than how it actually looks in real life.
