Daily Inspiration: Meet Esi Acolatse

Today we’d like to introduce you to Esi Acolatse.

Esi, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I’m a Ghanaian-American entrepreneur, content creator, and the founder of Melanin MagEK Travels. My journey has never really been about building a travel company, it’s always been about creating spaces where people feel seen, connected, and inspired.

Growing up in California, my parents worked incredibly hard to make sure my siblings and I stayed connected to our Ghanaian roots. While I was raised in the U.S., they made it a priority for us to experience Ghana regularly, and those trips shaped so much of who I am. It taught me my culture, a bit of my language, and how the world doesn’t just look one way.

After graduating from San Francisco State University, I chose a path that looked very different from what my family had envisioned. I followed my passion for media, storytelling, and content creation. I started creating content around Black culture, entertainment, and lifestyle because I wanted to tell stories that reflected people who looked like me and inspire others to embrace who they are.

Alongside building my businesses, I’ve continued creating content that documents my life as a Ghanaian-American woman, from traveling the world and exploring new destinations to sharing beauty, self-care, lifestyle, and pop culture. I want my platforms to feel like you’re catching up with a friend, honest, fun, inspiring, and authentic. Whether someone follows me for travel recommendations, everyday life, or encouragement to step outside of their comfort zone, my goal is always the same: to help people feel seen and remind them that they deserve to experience the world fully.

Before Melanin MagEK Travels, I founded Melanin MagEK, a brand centered around representation and self-love. That experience taught me something that still guides me today but something else felt more of my passion.

The idea for Melanin MagEK Travels came from something surprisingly simple. In 2019, a friend asked me for recommendations for her first trip to Ghana. After I mapped out everything she should do, she ended our conversation by saying, “I wish you could just come with us.” That one sentence stayed with me. Then, after returning to Ghana for my cousin’s wedding in 2021, I realized there were so many people who wanted to visit Africa but didn’t know where to start or felt intimidated planning such a meaningful trip on their own.

So I decided to create the experience I wished more people had.

In 2022, I organized my very first group trip to Ghana with 19 travelers. Seeing people experience the country through my eyes, watching them connect with the culture, the people, the food, and even parts of themselves they didn’t know they were searching for, confirmed that I was exactly where I was supposed to be. We followed it up with another successful group trip the following year, and today Melanin MagEK Travels continues to focus on helping people experience Ghana in an authentic, welcoming, and unforgettable way as we are about to celebrate 5 years!

At its core, Melanin MagEK Travels isn’t just about vacations. It’s about creating a bridge between people and culture. It’s about helping members of the African diaspora reconnect with their roots, introducing first-time travelers to the beauty of Africa, and reminding people that sometimes the most meaningful journeys are the ones that help you discover a new part of yourself.

I’m still growing, learning, and dreaming bigger every year, but that’s the exciting part. Melanin MagEK Travels started with one conversation, and today it’s become a platform that allows me to combine my love for storytelling, travel, and community. Whether I’m leading a group through the streets of Accra, creating travel content online, or encouraging someone to book the trip they’ve always dreamed about, my mission remains the same: to help people embrace who they are, explore the world with confidence, and create memories that last a lifetime.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I feel fortunate to say that the road has been much smoother than I expected in one important way: our trips themselves have gone incredibly well. Of course, international travel always comes with the occasional hiccup: flight delays, luggage arriving late, or unexpected schedule adjustments, but those are things you learn to prepare for. As a trip host, my job is to stay calm, solve problems quickly, and make sure my travelers still have an amazing experience. Those moments have actually reinforced why I started Melanin MagEK Travels in the first place: so people have someone they trust navigating the unexpected alongside them and sometimes for them.

The bigger challenge has honestly been getting the word out. There are a lot of companies organizing trips to Ghana, and standing out in a growing industry isn’t easy, especially as a small business owner wearing every hat. Marketing, content creation, partnerships, customer service, and trip planning all fall on me, and sometimes it can feel like there aren’t enough hours in the day.

The interesting part is that my biggest challenge isn’t creating an incredible experience, it’s helping people understand what makes our trips different before they ever book. I know I may be biased, but I genuinely believe there’s something special about the community we’ve built. We don’t just take people to Ghana; we welcome them into a family. Whether it’s someone’s first time on the continent or they’re returning to reconnect with their roots, I want them to feel supported from the moment they book until long after they return home.

The people who have traveled with us often tell me they leave with lifelong friendships, a deeper appreciation for Ghana, and memories they’ll never forget. My hope is simply that more people get the chance to experience that for themselves. I truly believe that once someone joins a Melanin MagEK Travels trip, they’ll understand why I love doing this so much.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I wear a few different hats, but they all revolve around one thing: storytelling.

I’m the founder of Melanin MagEK Travels, where I curate group travel experiences to Ghana that are rooted in culture, connection, and community. I also create lifestyle and travel content, documenting my experiences as a Ghanaian-American woman through travel, beauty, self-care, pop culture, and everyday life. Whether someone is watching one of my vlogs or traveling with me across the world, my goal is the same: to inspire people to step outside their comfort zone, embrace who they are, and experience the beauty of the world around them.

I specialize in creating experiences that feel personal. Whether online or in person, I want people to feel like they’re doing life with a friend. My content gives people an authentic look into my life and travels, while Melanin MagEK Travels gives them the opportunity to experience Ghana alongside someone who knows and genuinely loves the country.

What I’m most proud of is the community that’s grown from this work. I’ve watched complete strangers become lifelong friends on our trips. I’ve seen travelers reconnect with their heritage, visit Africa for the very first time, and leave with a new appreciation for Ghana and for themselves. Those moments remind me why I started.

I think what sets Melanin MagEK Travels apart is that our trips are built on relationships, not transactions. I don’t see myself as just a tour host, I see myself as someone inviting people into a place that’s deeply personal to me. Ghana isn’t just a destination on a map; it’s part of my family’s story and my own identity. Every itinerary is thoughtfully planned to balance adventure, culture, history, relaxation, and genuine connection.

I also believe my background as a content creator allows me to create an experience that’s both memorable and shareable. I love helping travelers capture the moments they’ll cherish forever while also documenting the beauty of Ghana in a way that encourages more people to visit. My hope is that whether someone follows my content or joins one of my trips, they leave feeling inspired, connected, and excited to see more of the world.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
One of the things I love most about San Francisco is how diverse it is. Growing up here as a Ghanaian-American, I was exposed to so many different cultures, perspectives, and communities, and I think that shaped the way I see the world. It’s a city full of people with incredible stories, creativity, and resilience. I also love that there’s always something happening, from community festivals and cultural celebrations to new restaurants and hidden gems. As someone who loves storytelling and travel, I appreciate living in a place that encourages curiosity and connection.

What I probably like least is how difficult it can be for small businesses and creators to grow here. The cost of living is incredibly high, and pursuing entrepreneurship often means balancing multiple jobs, making sacrifices, and taking big risks. It can be challenging, but it’s also made me more resourceful and determined. Despite those challenges, I’m grateful to call San Francisco home because it’s where I found my voice, built my business, and continue to dream bigger. It’s a city that has taught me resilience, and for that, I’ll always be thankful.
