Today we’d like to introduce you to Edith Rockett.
Hi Edith, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
In my 20+ year career in Special Education with one of the largest school districts in Texas, I have had the pleasure of working with families and their loved ones with special needs. My journey throughout those years provided me experience as a Life Skills classroom teacher, Life skills specialist, Autism Specialist, Behavior Specialist and High School Special Education Campus Coordinator. I gained an immeasurable amount of knowledge, some very valuable skills and built an arsenal of tools and resources. Most importantly, I was in a community with some great leaders who I now call friends. A journey of 20+ years cannot be fulfilling without being part of a community, and I know our clients want to be part of a community, as well. I am a problem solver by nature, and as I saw how fulfilling life was for students with special needs in the school system, I couldn’t help but think about what life for them was once they exited into adult life. So here I am, attempting to put a dent in the need for those adults who left the schools and need a community.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road, but it has been one defined by growth and persistence. Like many startups, financial challenges have been a constant. However, our work is unique in that our challenges are deeply connected to those we serve, adults with disabilities who are also navigating financial barriers in accessing services.
While some individuals have resources through Medicaid waivers or personal funds, not everyone has that access. That reality has pushed us to be intentional and creative in how we structure our program, always asking how we can make our services more accessible and affordable without compromising quality.
These challenges have strengthened our commitment to our purpose. They’ve required us to think beyond traditional models, advocate for our community, and remain flexible in meeting diverse needs. It hasn’t been easy, but it has been meaningful—and it continues to shape the impact we’re working to make.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
What we’re most proud of is the sense of belonging we’ve built. Our participants are not just attending a program—they are part of a community where they are valued, supported, and encouraged to grow. Seeing individuals gain confidence, build relationships, and take pride in their work is at the heart of everything we do. Our work centers on creating opportunities and experiences where individuals can build practical skills, explore their interests, and develop greater independence. From community outings and volunteer work to life skills training and creative projects, everything we do is designed with purpose and inclusion in mind.
What sets us apart is our deeply personalized approach and the experience behind our leadership. With over 25 years in special education, our foundation is rooted in understanding diverse needs and creating supports that truly work. We don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach—we adapt, problem-solve, and meet people where they are. Even with challenges like transportation and funding, we remain committed to making our program accessible, meaningful, and impactful for every individual we serve.
Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
The most important lesson we’ve learned is that flexibility and purpose go hand in hand. No matter how much you plan, there will always be unexpected challenges—especially when you’re serving a community with diverse and evolving needs. Being willing to adapt, problem-solve, and rethink your approach is essential.
At the same time, you can’t lose sight of your “why.” Every decision, be it funding, programming, or logistics, needs to be grounded in the mission of creating meaningful, accessible opportunities for the individuals we serve.
