Today we’d like to introduce you to Courtney Santos.
Hi Courtney, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
My journey started when I was sitting with my grandma, looking through old family photos. Something about those images—the way they held memories and stories—captured my attention. I realized then that I wanted to be the one behind the camera, preserving those moments.
From there, I became the go-to person with a camera at family functions and events. I practiced constantly and before long, people started offering to pay me. Photography naturally evolved into a side job. Over time, it became more than just a way to document life—it turned into a personal form of expression and even a form of art therapy.
Photography helps me process the world around me. Whether I’m working with clients or creating for myself, my goal is always the same: to capture the best version of someone—the way I see them through my lens.
I’ve always kept that passion alive by continuing to learn. I consider myself a lifelong student, always striving to refine my craft and grow both creatively and professionally.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many creatives, I’ve had to deal with the realities of limited resources—especially early on. Equipment breaking at the worst times, the constant need to upgrade gear, and the rising costs of staying current in the industry have all been ongoing challenges.
Staying relevant while juggling these obstacles hasn’t been easy. But I’ve learned to be resourceful—maintaining my gear, finding creative solutions, and always doing the best I can with what I have. Every struggle has taught me something and helped me grow, both as a professional and as an artist.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I do a mix of many things, from creating fine art prints to working in live theater, from capturing headshots to houses for realtors. Throughout my career, I’ve worn many hats, but one of the greatest privileges of my work has been spending years capturing families’ milestones—birthdays, graduations, reunions, and more. Watching families grow and being trusted to preserve those moments has been incredibly rewarding. It’s not just about taking pictures—it’s about building lasting relationships and documenting stories that matter.
How do you define success?
For me, success is about impact and connection. It’s not just about recognition or income—though those can be affirming and necessary—but about knowing that the work I do means something to someone.
Whether I’m capturing a family’s milestone, producing a piece of art that moves someone, or contributing to a live theater production that brings people together, success is when I walk away knowing I made a positive difference.
I also define success as continuous growth—creatively, personally, and professionally. If I’m still learning, still challenging myself, and still finding joy in what I do, then I know I’m on the right path.
