Today we’d like to introduce you to Cody Nunn.
Hi Cody, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’m Cody, a graphite pencil artist. I’ve always been interested in art since a young age. It’s one of my favorite things. I’m a self taught artist, I didn’t have any formal training. I’d practice by looking at other artists and their work. Breaking down their compositions to the best of my abilities. Looking at what materials they use and how they use them.
I became interested in selling my work at in person events in 2020 when I was 19. Noticing other artist selling their work at pop ups and large conventions. I felt I had something to work towards. I began selling my art for the first time at local pop up markets around San Antonio. My first being in late July 2024. And my largest event being C2E2 (Chicago Comic & Entertainment Expo) April 11-13 2025. I also got accepted to Anime NYC later this year Aug 21-24 2025
Spending a year and a half building up a portfolio. I began with 6 pieces and added 10 more since July. I sell both Fine Art prints and vinyl stickers of my original graphite work.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The hardest part about being self taught is the fact there’s no one there to guide you. I have to over analyze everything I make. Once a drawing is completed I try to see what works and what can be improved upon in my next piece.
The selling part has been a learning curve. Trying to find the best way to improve my table display while fitting it onto of a 5 ft table. I usually have a new variation of my table display every month or so.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I work traditionally with pencil and paper. My preferred pencils are mechanical. I find they allow me to get smaller details.
I’m known for my surreal subject matter and the fact my work is in black and white. My personal favorite piece is Titled “Inner Self” and it’s the only piece that I wouldn’t want to change anything about. All my other pieces have at least one thing, whether small or large, I would have done differently.
The majority of my work is inspired by life experiences and dealing with mental health. Anxiety is usually the underlying tone in a lot of my work. Isolation, uncertainty with one’s future, and struggles with self identity are all examples of what my pieces represent.
Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
Honestly just if I end up getting accepted to a market or convention in the first place. And if there’s a good turn out at them. There are some markets where I didn’t sell anything.
