Daily Inspiration: Meet Amanda Emery

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Emery.

Hi Amanda, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I’ve been a journalist and working in local television news for 24 years. I started shooting football in high school, worked in radio in college, and got my first TV job while still in college. Started in Oklahoma, but spent the majority of my career (22 years) in San Antonio.

I’m currently the Senior Executive Producer at KABB & WOAI. I’ve worked through some of the most notable breaking news events including the Columbine school shooting, the 9/11 Terror Attacks, the Covid-19 pandemic, and plenty of local-level events in between.

I won an Emmy for our coverage of the Sutherland Springs Church shooting in 2018 and am involved in multiple community campaigns that work with St. Jude Children’s Hospital, San Antonio Food Bank, South Texas Blood & Tissue Center, and Ransomed Life to name a few. I am the president-elect for NISD’s Northside Education Foundation and have served on the board and executive committee for the last 4 years.

I am a Certified Personal Trainer, Nutrition Coach, kickboxing instructor, and competitive bodybuilder (that’s everything I do for fun on the side). I’m a trainer for Camp Gladiator and teach Bootcamp classes at 5 am on MWF before I go to my TV job. I have three kids… starting middle school, high school, and college this year.

I’m also a cancer survivor. My OBGYN discovered a lump in my throat in October 2020 and I had a total thyroidectomy by March 2021.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Plenty of struggles… the broadcast industry has been a rollercoaster ride, especially lately. The job is 24/7, non-stop, and very stressful.

But I’ve met and worked with some of the most amazing people who really care about helping others and that’s the kind of team I like to be a part of. Cancer is certainly threw me and my family for a loop, but I consider it a bump in the road of life… it’s all about mindset and I was determined not to let it keep me down.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I like to stay busy… and while being a personal trainer and television executive producer may seem to be two opposite careers, they really work well together. Both are about helping people.

Both require organization, dedication, and patience. And I really couldn’t do one without the other. Fitness… whether working out myself or training others… is a lifestyle that really provides an outlet for stress and keeps me healthy. It puts me in a position to be my best at everything else I do… from being a mom to working in TV.

I love helping others realize and reach their goals, both in their careers and in living a healthier lifestyle. I lead by example and love to watch others succeed. I am proud to look back and see the people I gave their first job to and where they are now. And to see the people I’ve brought together and the lifelong friendships that have been created.

It just goes to show the impact you can have on someone’s life.

I’m proud of being a strong, successful woman and a positive role model for my children. I’m known for a few things… notably my love for purple, Oreos, planking, and taking on challenges. In 2019, I decided 2 weeks out from the San Antonio Rock n Roll marathon to run the full route, so I did. I set my planking record (over 13min) that same weekend.

Any advice for finding a mentor or networking in general?
I have always loved the advice of making sure the majority of people in your circle are where you want to be.

Maybe a little smarter, successful, etc… people you can learn from. It’s also important to make sure you can offer those same things to the people around you. We should build each other up and realize there is room for all of us to be successful.

I also think it’s important to identify the sources of negativity in your life, the things that bring you anxiety and find a way to control those things or change the dynamic. Life is too short to live that way.
