Today we’d like to introduce you to Alexandra Langley.
Hi Alexandra, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I had loved and appreciated music all of my life, but I never pictured myself picking up an instrument. When I was 10 years old, I started my journey of learning how to play the flute in my 5th-grade band program. The more I developed my skills through taking private lessons and remaining active in band, the more I fell in love with making music. That love carried me through middle school and high school as I entered the worlds of marching band, All-State Honor Band, orchestra, and solo performances. I knew I wanted a career in music by the end of high school. I attended the University of North Texas, where I studied under Terri Sundberg, and graduated in May 2020 with my Bachelor’s Degree in Flute Performance. Outside of school, I became an active church flutist at First Baptist Gainesville and Stonebriar Community Church where I give my praises to God through performing. Once the COVID-19 Pandemic hit, I knew I had to get creative with my music. Thus, I found love for making flute arrangements of a wide variety of songs from soundtracks to pop songs. I also held virtual recitals and run my own Youtube Channel where I shared all of my performances from Classical repertoire to my multi-tracks. Today, I’m pursuing my Master’s Degree in Flute Performance at Texas Christian University under Dr. Shauna Thompson as a Graduate Assistant. I’m proud to have experienced many performances over my 14-year career because it gave me opportunities to not only grow as a musician but also confirm that this is what I want to do with my life. That is performing! Music has helped me come out of my shell and express myself when words fail. Music has been a gateway for me to embrace my creativity. For that, I’m eternally grateful to be a musician.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Some days have been easier than others. The biggest struggle I’ve faced as a musician over the years is to not let fear control my actions and to remember to give myself grace. It is incredibly easy to give in to the negative thoughts telling you that you aren’t good enough and you’ll never improve. Once you give in to the negativity, it escalates into a downward spiral emotionally and mentally which will affect your performance. What has helped me overcome that is to stop, take a break, come back, and strategize. As soon as I clear my head, I’m able to breathe and analyze what can I do that help me improve in a positive manner. For example, if I’m working on a difficult passage, I can look over it and utilize the technical exercises or theory training I’ve learned to help me understand that passage more effectively. I also have to remember that getting a piece down perfectly doesn’t happen overnight. It will take time, whether that be a couple of days or a month. I remember to give myself grace and know that I will get the piece down. It will happen.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a flutist who performs in soloist settings, chamber settings, and large ensemble settings. Most of the time, I am a soloist and independent recording artist. I’m most known for my solo performances and my multitrack performances on flute, piccolo, alto flute, and bass flute in classical repertoire and pop songs. I’m the proudest of my ability to be versatile as a performer. I can be elegant and poised when I’m performing a flute repertoire with resonance and beauty. I can also be theatrical and channel different characters in certain pop songs or soundtrack (movies, musicals, TV shows, video games) songs both in costume and in flute tone colors. I believe what sets me apart is my ability to be fearless as a performer and arranger. I can fully immerse myself in character with costumes, makeup, languages, and rapping. I can tackle songs that one may not expect from a flutist. I can utilize auxiliary flutes to broaden my range in flute performance and add more layers to one of my flute arrangements.
What was your favorite childhood memory?
My favorite childhood memory would be traveling to the Dominican Republic every year until was 10 to visit my grandparents who lived there at the time. It was always a fun adventure going to another country and exploring their culture and sights. I enjoyed trying their flavorful food, visiting the beach in Cabarete, exploring the monuments in Santiago, and practicing my Spanish with the local people. I haven’t been back in about 14 years. I would love to visit the DR again in the future.
