Today we’d like to introduce you to A-Wake. They and their team shared their story with us below:
私たちはA-Wakeです! 私たちは輝く愛の笑顔! We are A-Wake! Together we are a shinning smile of love! From a young age we have all enjoyed singing. After Rina, Katsumi, and Angel joined an idol competition for fun and won, they received great praise and were encouraged to form a group. With Rina Denka as the leader, Katsumi Kobayashi and Angel as members, and Victorica who was helping out as an assistant at the time joined together. We officially formed our group, A-Wake in 2016. A-Wake is our way of hoping that like the sunrise you can rise up in the morning with a beautiful joy in your heart. In hopes of bringing everyone the same joy that is our hearts we work together to bring a smile to your heart with everything we do. Together our group has made covers, music videos, panels, and have performed locally at various conventions and events ever since. In 2019, Victorica joined as an honorary member of the group. This same year our group began the journey of making our own original music. We began working with a production group initially, but due to the pandemic, the production group closed down, and we were left back where we started. Rina had made lyrics, and we had a beginning idea of what we wanted it to sound like. We began our journey to self-produce our song by hiring someone to make an instrumental and moving forward from there. We have faced many trials along the way but keep doing our best to overcome them. Victorica is now a member of the group and is the interim leader while Rina is away in Japan. Our group continues to perform locally, and we still are working hard to make our original music. Upon Rina’s return we hope to release our first album and continue performing together, bringing a smile to your hearts.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not, what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
As an idol group we have faced many different challenges along the way. From the beginning, none of us had any experience in the industry, so we had to teach ourselves everything from how to dance to using singing techniques, booking performances, managing and editing media, and so much more. While we were well received among many, we have also had our fair share of haters along the way. Even with some negative response thrown our way we still hope to continue to grow and bring a smile to everyone’s hearts. As a group, scheduling has also always been a challenge. We each are in different stages in our lives. Balancing full time work schedules, school, and practice coordination times often prove to be difficult. As a group of four it is sometimes hard to meet together due to a schedule conflict. When accepting a performance request we do so as a group. We are a group who performs as one unit. Unfortunately due to our size some events don’t want to accept our group as a whole when requesting us. While these roadblocks have hindered our progress at times, we have found other creative ways of making do with what we have. The same applies to other resources we have. We are self-funded; hence, our resources are minimal. The cost of travel and equipment makes it difficult for us to expand and perform outside of our local area. We have been working on our original music for a long time but have hit many barriers. Our resourcefulness, dedication, and creativity has allowed us to learn and grow so much. We do our best to overcome each obstacle with a smile and never give up.
Thanks – so, what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
We are an idol group that specializes in J-pop and K-pop covers and are in the process of creating our original music. We are known as a local San Antonio idol group that hosts panels and performs at local conventions. We are most proud of the progress that we have made together and our continual accomplishments. Our group is unique as we are all blood-related sisters who can share our passions through song and dance. We are one of the only idol groups in San Antonio that sing and dance live at every performance. Our goal is to be a shining smile of love to all. We aim to inspire others through our love and joy, giving them the confidence to pursue their passions.
What makes you happy?
We all love inspiring others with our songs. We wanted to take the joy that idols bring us and share it with the world. It brings us great joy knowing that through interactions with our fans, they see the love we share, and it has inspired them to pursue their passions and hobbies with the same enthusiasm and joy. Our fanbase “Morning Star” has given us encouragement and is living proof that we are making a difference. The world has so much negativity and discouragement, making people often give up pursuing what they love. We aim to be a beacon of light shining to awaken their hearts.
