Conversations with Sidney Hill

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sidney Hill.

Hi Sidney, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
What brought me into the chocolate world is my main culinary passion. I’ve been in love with and have invested in the culinary field since the age of three when I was able to assist my grandmother with cooking for my mother. What pushed me further was the fact my mother was fighting breast cancer and seeing that food was able to bring her such joy through the pain led me into this field. How does chocolate play a part? Through my journey, I’ve grown to understand the style of cuisine I wished to pursue, and it starts with creating as many things from scratch as possible. In order to produce the best quality, owning the process is where it must begin. With goals of owning restaurants in the near future, having the ability to control the full flavor of our desserts is critical for reaching our goals and in creating products that help to assist others when they are in pain, sorrow, or stress by bringing joy to the homes of many.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Haha, definitely many obstacles I’ve had to overcome throughout the journey. Inconsistencies, time management, stress, employment, finances, scheduling, etc. Throughout the past 3 years of chocolate making, I’ve been focusing on developing the skills necessary to combat them. Life is like a game to me, it’s all about growing and moving forward. Learning from one’s mistakes is all a part of the trip. I could play the victim and want someone to fix my problems or I can own them and work on bettering myself.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
Art, for me, is freedom of expression, having the ability to soothe one’s mind and body with a creation. Personally, I enjoy art in a few forms: Culinary, Abstract & Photography.

Culinary is my main form of art., Food isn’t just supposed to be consumed but felt. Food is a reflection of one’s happiness so any time I create a new dish/item I’m always wondering “How do I want the consumer to receive this dish?” With Picasso being one of my favorite artists, (cliche, I know) his art is ultimately free, bold, and sparks unique thoughts. The love of creating something deeper than just what is seen brings creativity to the consumer and sparks free thoughts. Photography is my way to display one of the ultimate beauties of the world-nature. When starting my photography road, one thing that stood out to me is how nature in itself is alive. Nature is truth, real, life, death, creation, homes, and peace. It captures living things being one in nature expressing themselves as freely as the trees.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Many things bring me joy, from culinary to business, sports, cars, nature, wisdom, computers, etc. I love a challenge and so I find everything as such. Happiness to me is really the ability to grow and expand my understanding of life. I do agree with life being short so I live life with the understanding that there will be many things I will never know but I continuously learn as much as I can till that day arrives.
