Conversations with Ray Santos

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ray Santos

Hi Ray, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I have always loved to draw growing up and have always had a passion for it at the time I was heavy into graffiti and had left my other artistic work behind when a good friend suggested I sign up for this art show here in town and convinced me to do it at the time I didn’t know what I was doing it had been years since I did anything else but draw graffiti but I was determined to give this a shot and I guess I did something right and that small little art show has turned me into the artist I am today

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The road as artist has never been smooth art doesn’t really pay the bills when your unknown so trying to balance a day job along with pursuing my passion to be a full time working artist has always been a struggle. That along with all the self doubt and the long periods of artist block really can take its toll on a person.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I work in a variety of all different mediums from traditional work using tools such as acrylics, markers, and good old fashioned pencil and paper to digital work that I was against for years but have finally come around to it. I’d like to say I’m known for my use of colors coming from graffiti I transitioned my use of bright vibrant colors to make my work pop more. Proudest moment as of lately was having a voice actor purchase of me of my paintings that was a special moment for me and highly unexpected because it was a very last minute convention for me. What sets me apart I don’t really know I’ve always said I’m an artist of the people and it’s never really been about the money but making people happy. If you knew me and how I am out at conventions I’m always giving away free prints to kids just to make them happy.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Art isn’t perfect and it never will be you’ll always have something new to learn and never give up on what you love
