Conversations with Rachel “Rae” Busby

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rachel “Rae” Busby.

Hi Rachel “Rae”, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
As a kid, I remember watching my mama braid all the church ladies’ hair in our living room. I would sit there with my barbies and try to do what mama was doing. Eventually, she stopped doing hair altogether and I took on her clients, all the way through high school. I continued doing hair my freshman year at UT San Antonio. In 2010, my second year, I left college and enrolled in cosmetology school… it was rough, but I made it through and graduated in 2013.

I immediately began with fashion and hair shows around the city and became a hairstylist for the San Antonio Spurs Silver Dancers. In 2015, I began my career in TV/Film with Regina King being my first actress! I also acquired my cosmetology instructor’s license, nonsurgical hair replacement specialist certification, medical hair loss certification, and eyelash extensions certification. My TV/Film career has since taken me to Los Angeles where I am currently working steadily on different productions.

Most recently I have launched a brand with my business partner William “Elijah” Smith is known as “The Crowned Collection,” and we are extremely proud of its success so far. I can’t wait to see what else God has in store for us! To see what I’m up to follow me on IG @hairgurae and @thecrownnedcollection. You can also check out my film work on IMDB!

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
2016 was the most challenging year of my life to date…my grandmother died in February and 4 months later my mother fell very ill. Then of course COVID-19 halted all of our lives.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a proud black woman with the skills to style any type of hair, but most importantly to me, textured hair. This is considered a “special skill” in the film industry since there is a shortage of stylists with that skill. The thing that sets me apart is the fact that I’m never satisfied with the knowledge, and always seeking to gain more. I’m the type of person to learn how to make honey from a bee sting.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
Growing up, the only girl of four, I’ve always had to play with the boys! My brothers have always been a source of inspiration and motivation. Without them, I wouldn’t be the successful woman I am today!
