Conversations with Michael Harris

Today we’d like to introduce you to Michael Harris.

Hi Michael , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Since the late 1970s I have driven by an RV park called Dinosaur Flats. I was always curious what they had to offer. This curious journey continued until 2020 when my curiosity got the best of me and I decided to stop by. By this time it was now owned by the Heritage Museum of the Texas Hill Country. My wife and I took the Track Tour and learned of the various volunteer opportunities. I took the docent training and volunteered with construction and maintenance projects as well as give tours. A Board Member somehow talked me into joining the Board of Directors. After being on the Board for a few years I was elected as President of the Board where I still serve in that capacity. All Board members are volunteers and have strong passions for various aspects of operating a small non-nonprofit museum.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being a volunteer, Board member, docent, and Board president has not always been a smooth road. Being a small nonprofit we rely heavily on tourism. Unfortunately Covid, lake water levels, and other factors have made visitation unpredictable. Thanks to generous members and donors we are able to continue operations.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Before entering the world of being a volunteer I spent 28 years in municipal service as a police officer. I believe my ability to be able to communicate with a wide variety of people continues to help me even as a volunteer.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
Having a prior career in law enforcement is not what most people expect.
