Hi Madison, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Hi! I’m Madison and I’m a 19 year old San Antonio native! My shop is called the Cosmic Cowgirl Co. I started the Cosmic Cowgirl because I wanted to have something to do during Covid and I wanted to have trendy jewelry but not for the price, as well as a way to create some money for my college tuition!
I quickly realized that I was pretty good at making necklaces and bracelets so I posted some on my Instagram and my Snapchat, and immediately had people request their own custom pieces!
That was during 2020/2021 and now almost 2 years later, I’ve expanded myself to even more jewelry pieces, accessories, candles, and custom cups!
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Like any small business, there are bumps in the road. I have done a few popup shops that have not been very successful for me which can be very deterring since I spend so much time on my shop.
Sometimes, I get a customer stop by and even comment on how they can make it at home, or buy a ‘professional’ piece or accessory somewhere else.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
My full-time job is being a student but my full-time passion is the Cosmic Cowgirl.
I love to make resin keychains because the designs and colors are endless, I love making candles because naming them and creating scents are so fun, I love creating custom cups because it’s an incentive to stay hydrated and healthy, and I love to create jewelry or design new pieces because it allows me to stay trendy and update with my own personal collection!
I am proud of everything I do and how much knowledge I have gained. Especially on the financial side, everyone who knows me knows I am terrible at math so my business has helped me continue to practice those skills (I’m a Political Science major! No math here).
I would say that my business is different because I have not had as much success as others, instead of comparing myself constantly I take notes, and I slowly but surely gain customers and an audience! My perseverance definitely sets me aside from most small businesses, and so do my colors!
I have people tell me how they’ve never seen that much pink in their life when referring to my booth! It brings me joy!
What matters most to you? Why?
What matters most is that I can show people that they can do whatever they put their mind to. I support women and think that we can be successful and supportive of each other in everything that we do.
I want little girls who come to my booth to know that they can do whatever they want! I want the little boys who are embarrassed to come by my booth to realize that pink is a color for them too.
I want women to be empowered by their ideas and not be afraid to start something of their own creativity! I want them to feel empowered when they have an idea and act on it! That’s what is most important to me, women empowerment!
