Conversations with Heather Stockton-Peña

Today we’d like to introduce you to Heather Stockton-Peña.

Hi Heather, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started my small business (Higher Light) in 2020 while I was trying to finish my bachelors degree for graphic design online. At that point in my life, I was doing watercolor commissions and logo/branding freelance work. Higher Light started off as a hobby based business, with me making and selling earrings and candles online. As I grew and evolved so did my small business; 6 years later I am still at it, selling jewelry, accessories, my art/prints, and even surface designs online and at local markets. It’s been amazing seeing my art, color palettes, and my design style change over the years.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It hasn’t been smooth, there’s been some daunting bumps in road, but I do my best to go with the flow; it doesn’t fix the road but it helps the ride go smoother than it would otherwise. Some of the biggest bumps I’m still trying to get a grip on would have to be social media & bossing myself around.
The struggle of bossing oneself around while simultaneously finding the “I’m burnt out” line is one of the hardest but most important parts to balance out when having a small business.
Taxes and expense management is nothing compared to the stress of burnout/block.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I work with different mediums but tend to stick with graphite, digital, watercolor, and photography; sometimes even mixing mediums.
My works normally include themes of balance, transformation and someone has even stated ‘cosmic existentialism’. My art is known for having bold line work and vibrant colors. My major goals with my art is to mesh the physical world with spiritual concepts and symbols but also to show the magic & importance nature holds.

How do you define success?
For a long time I thought of success as having financial stability with my art alone. This is now more of a goal than a definition though. I have found that my definition of success has become more simple, perhaps a little cliché, but success for me is doing what I love and having the ability to share it with others. For that I’m successful and grateful.
