Conversations with Gabriel Highland

Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabriel Highland

Hi Gabriel, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I consulted for a few companies here in the States and abroad in Mexico when I discovered my passion for photography and videography.

In 2018 I started Heart Productions as a primarily birth (and newborn) photography and videography company and secured contracts with a couple hospital systems here and in Austin. At the same time I also purchased a photo studio company that would compliment our services after the families left the hospital. The goal would be to become a one-stop-shop for all the needs of a growing family that would want to capture their moments. We hired a staff of experienced photographers to help us capture the needs of every new (or returning) mom that wanted to capture these moments

As everything started opening back up again we regained our services into the hospitals as well and branched out to do corporate events as well. We’ve captured UTSA events, Conventions, and other great experiences. Now in 2025 we’re looking to expand even further now that we’ve also gathered experience in weddings, engagements, gender reveals, and many others!

We love being able to capture moments both in beautiful photography and a commemorative video that people will cherish forever.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Everything was going great until March 2020 when the pandemic hit. She was one of our last videos that we were able to capture. It hit us on multiple fronts because people were no longer leaving the house (to go to a studio for photos) and due to hospital restrictions we had to pause all operations for a full year at least. (coincidentally my first and only daughter was born right at the cusp of hospitals shutting down and was one of the last videos we were able to capture at the time)

But with adversity we adapted and changed how we operated to survive. We closed down the physical studio location and began offering on location services for milestone events. We began capturing birthday parties at home, baptisms, quinceaneras, and all sorts of wonderful events.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
Prior to starting Heart Productions, I had mainly focused on business strategy and operations. I worked for a few small businesses in San Diego in both Sales and Operations.

I consulted for Kaiser Associates as well on international projects and helped bridged a cultural and language divide in Mexico with large infrastructure projects that required coordination with government departments.

I loved working with people and enjoyed new challenges from wherever they may land.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Yes this was one of the main obstacles we had to face, and only 1-2 years into starting the company. The pandemic hit our company especially hard since our main client base was in the hospitals at the time and there were immediate restrictions that lasted over a year in what we were allowed to do. However we adapted and increased our client base to on location shoots with all the knowledge we had from in hospital sessions. Now we are proud to serve all San Antonio and Austin for any events, from family milestones to corporate events.
