Conversations with Felipe Romero

Today we’d like to introduce you to Felipe Romero.

Hi Felipe, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
Levanta Muertos Coffee Co. started as an opportunity to showcase Mexican coffee from my grandparent’s region. I would make coffee at work for all my colleagues and slowly started selling coffee grounds in ziplock bags. Abuelita would wake us up with a fresh pot of coffee made in an olla or ceramic jar, and I would see how all my family would get together at the table with a great cup of coffee. Coffee brings me so many fond memories of my Mexican heritage. Mexico is famous for the richness of its soils which gives farmers the advantage of growing multiple varieties of coffee beans with different balances, flavors, and aromas that expand your pallet.

I am inspired daily to bring the taste and passion of cultivating, roasting, and tasting coffee. We want to promote Mexican coffee around the world and are excited about the opportunity to share this passion with our coffee aficionados. Levanta Muertos Coffee Co.’s mission is to become experts in coffee manufacturing and design new blends sourced from the best coffee beans in Mexico. We will accomplish this by building strong relationships with the coffee community, from the producers to our customers. We deliver high quality, great service, and a taste of Mexico.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
We started the company in 2018 and have been on a fantastic voyage ever since. We have met several challenges throughout the years, worldwide coffee shortages, inflation, and a pandemic that made importing coffee difficult for a start-up company. Great visionaries will always encounter challenges that derail them from accomplishing their goals, but with grit mixed in with hard work and a little luck, you learn to ride a start-up company’s highs and lows.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
Levanta Muertos Coffee Co. (LMC Co.) is unique because of our name and because we specialize in roasting single-origin coffee from the best regions in Mexico. We don’t add additives to enhance the flavor or give it more body—we only roast Arabica Beans. We take pride in being socially responsible; LMC Co. works with small co-ops from Chiapas, Veracruz, and Oaxaca, which allows the farmers to get their coffee paid fairly and to promote it not only in Mexico but here in the US too. A portion of our profits supports educational opportunities in Mexico and other local communities.

Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
We work with small co-ops from Chiapas, Veracruz, and Oaxaca, allowing the farmers to get their coffee paid fairly and promote it not only in Mexico but here in the US too. We are always willing to participate in charitable events to help the local communities in any way we can. Levanta Muertos Coffee supports youth programs in Mexico to invest in the future of our kids.

Our coffee is “ecologically” produced in the southern mountainous regions of our country. Hence its name, “mountain-grown coffee” (Café de Altura)” at small, locally owned, and operated coffee farms. Not all our coffees carry the “organic” label because some farmers simply are too small or cannot afford the certification process.

Pricing:

  • Sin Fronteras Small Batch Coffee – $15.00
  • Las Mañanitas Small Batch Coffee – $14.00
