Today we’d like to introduce you to Dalton Ponder.
Hi Dalton, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
What started as a one off shows scheduled with a couple of hometown friends, Dalton Ponder & Nathan Burke & Mason Creager, developed into the chemistry that introduced Mason Creager & The Gulf Coast Drifters (GCD). Mason recorded his first single (One More Time) in 2009 when he was 15 years old, and now, at 27 is ready to release his debut album with the band.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all, but anything worth doing I think is going to be hard.
– learning to play country music as a fan of hard rock music all my life
– the difficulties of starting a band from nothing
– learning what my style and sound are going to be without ripping anyone off
– excepting that I am not technically the best guitar player but finding my own style
– playing through covid how to play shows during a pandemic and hyper political environment
– dealing wiht the business side of music
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m known for bringing some of the nastiest guitar solos west of the Mississippi.
Right now, I’m most proud of the guitar solo I did on our latest single at – https://masoncreagerandthegulfcoastdrifters.hearnow.com/.
I think what sets me apart from other guitar players is that I don’t take myself too seriously, I like to shred and play fast, but I also still keep the soul in my music not just technical ability.
Can you talk to us about how you think about risk?
The biggest risk I’ve taken, as is the case I think with most artists is creating your own art and marketing it to the public.
Besides just deciding to be in a band deciding to be on an album has been my biggest risk. You never know what people are going to think of your work.
