Conversations with Crystal Perez-Jimenez

Today we’d like to introduce you to Crystal Perez-Jimenez.

Crystal, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I have always enjoyed doing hair, makeup, and nails as far back as I can remember. While I planned on going to school for cosmetology, I ended up getting married and having children at a young age. There always seemed to be some obstacle that prevented me from going. As it turns out, I ended up divorced and a single Mom making things even more difficult. However, this ended up being a blessing in disguise because it pushed me to finally go to school and eventually open my own salon suite.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely was not a smooth road. While I had support from my mother in taking care of my kids, I missed a lot with them and that weighed heavy on my heart.

I was also going to school and working. Then there was the pandemic that required remote learning, which was a huge challenge trying to learn online in a house full of kids.

The biggest challenge being the passing of one of my closest friends.

Through all of this, I still managed to get my license. Shortly after, I started my first job at a shop where after 6 months I decided the best thing for me is to be self-employed. So I jumped right into a space with a partner. Unfortunately, she had to leave shortly after signing the suite contract, leaving me on my own to pay for our space.

While all of these challenges made things difficult, they brought me to where I am now in my own space and building my clientele.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m a hairstylist, cosmetologist and learning nail technician. I specialize in vivid hair color and I have a huge passion for learning nails and nail art. I love to teach my clients as much as I can for the health of their hair and nails. It’s very rewarding to hear that what I have suggested is helping them with their struggles and confidence. I’m most proud of my ability to continually learn and improve in all aspects of my career. This industry is always changing and growing that’s why I love it so much.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I was born here and I love the culture that our city has. I have always loved the roots of this city and how it ties to love in cooking and family. I love that when someone needs help many come to assist without question.
