Conversations with Christine Adams

Today we’d like to introduce you to Christine Adams.

Hi Christine, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I’ve always been a fan of fantasy, myth, and urban legends. After college, I got involved in Live Action Roleplay and started creating characters and costumes for the games. During the Pandemic when I was trapped at my house with no LARPs to attend, I started to see that mermaid costuming was becoming more accessible to the public. It took a few more years, but I finally fell down the mermaid hole becoming a PADI Instructor and then deciding to perform publicly.

Being able to utilize my creativity and crafting skills to make different “lurks” for my mermaid character has been an awesome outlet. I want to see where I can take my performing and artistic skills next!

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Some of it has been so easy it was surprising, but my spouse is in the military and we end up moving every few years. This means a massive life change, finding new employment, and making new friends and connections.

I am also not the typical mermaid performer and finding out what that means as a nonbinary person has definitely taken some work.

Gaining the confidence to branch out as a drag creature and perform in non-mermaid spaces is a specific challenge for me, because it’s an entirely new community.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I love to invite others into a fantastical world, whether it is through teaching them how to mermaid, helping them with their costuming, performing in a tank, or running tabletop fantasy games.

In the mermaid community I am most known for my creative waterproof makeup looks and my unique underwater performance style. I’m proud of the performances and art I’ve created and the friends I have made during the journey.

I love to have an open and inclusive play style when inviting other players into tabletop roleplay games. It’s important to me that people feel comfortable and not judged if they aren’t familiar with playing a character in a new setting.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
I wish someone had told me that you don’t have to be perfect. Other people will notice what you’re doing and they care more that you are trying than whatever perfect image you have mentally constructed. Just do the thing and don’t care about other peoples’ constrictive opinions of what your art is.
