Today we’d like to introduce you to Alvin Perry
Alvin, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I grew up on The Eastside & got into gangs and drug dealing at an early age in life. At the time I was just a funny person and my mother would joke that I should be a comedian one day but I didn’t know how to become a comedian. At the time I wanted to be a rapper. 9 months after graduating high school I caught my first 2 felony charges in 1999. In 2002 I was arrested and in prison in 2003. I was released in 2005 and by 2006 I was right back in prison. During that time I was reflecting on my life and what I needed to do to make a change so I said I was going to use all my talents to become successful. I was released in 2009 and eventually joined Facebook where I became, “Facebook famous”. I was still selling drugs and eventually was arrested again but that last arrest was what did it. I begin pursuing my dreams. I started making and selling t-shirts, doing community work but most importantly I started doing comedy. I was eventually sentenced to 15 months in State Jail in 2012 and while there I decided to pursue comedy full time. I was released in 2013 and one of the first shows I did was a headlining show and from then things started falling into place. I opened up for some big names, such as Kountry Wayne, TK Kirkland, Bubba Dubb, Scruncho, Damon Williams, Melanie Comarcho, Desi Alexander and more. I have been featured on 3 comedy specials, won multiple comedy competitions and recently I was voted Best Comic in San Antonio. I have performed all over Texas and as far as California and Atlanta. I’m apart of a trio of comedians called The Loud Pack and a lot of times we perform together. I have a natural ability to make people laugh. So much so, I rarely write jokes. Usually what people hear is me thinking it up on the spot. I have been doing comedy for 12 years and I have so many goals to reach and I feel like my time is coming.
We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Definitely not. There was a period I couldn’t perform because I was working at night or 2 jobs. I also had a baby during this time so I had to commit to my family more than comedy obviously. I was still learning how to be a comedian so when I didn’t do well I took it personal and it effected me mentally. Eventually things got better but I really wanted to quit because since I started late, I felt like I didn’t have time to waste.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I’m a comedian. I specialize in making people laugh. Besides my jokes and humor, I’m known for my t-shirt brand that is reflective of my personality on stage. We call that brand PA which is an abbreviation for something else. I’m also known for the different elements I bring to the stage. My biggest accomplishment so far is winning 1st place in a comedy competition and more recently being voted Best Comedian in San Antonio. Often I feel like I’m overlooked so that was a chance to prove myself to myself. I think what sets me apart is that I’m versatile and connect with any crowd. I even do clean comedy. I don’t like to limit myself so I think with my comedy brand and my ability to make anybody laugh, makes me different.
Is there a quality that you most attribute to your success?
I genuinely care about the people spending their money to see me. I try to connect with as many people as I can who are in those seats. I guess you can say I try to be personable with my fans and supporters. People who like you want to feel connected to you in some way so I make sure I take pics, hug and speak to those who spent their hard earned money to see me.
