Conversations with Abe Mac

Today we’d like to introduce you to Abe Mac.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I’m a self-taught musician. At age 8 out of El Paso, TX, I was a praise and worship leader at a Catholic and Christian church since my parents divorced at a young age. So I participated in both.

I grew up all my life wanting to play college football, and I did at UTEP (University of Texas at El Paso) from 2003 to 2007. I played for Coach Mike Price, who also nick-named me Abe Mac since he had a hard time saying my real name, Abiel Macias.

One day at our mini-camp in Socorro, NM before the start of our regular season, Coach Price had asked me to play a song for the team since I was always seen with a guitar in my hand when we had time off during football camp. I wrote my first song called,” Saturday night lights”.

A song about the college football experience from the perspective of the athlete. That really motivated me to move forward with a music career path. I am a father of 4 boys, while I am trying I inspire them to play sports or be part of the performance arts.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The struggles have been growing up in a single-parent house with my two other siblings.

My mom worked two jobs to make ends meet for us. The biggest challenge has been being a Hispanic Country singer-songwriter. It’s a taboo, I’m either trying to be “too white” or I am being,” too Mexican” in the country scene.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am a full-time singer-songwriter. I own Abe Mac Music business, which is also an entertainment/production. entity.

I write and produce my own music and soon will be introducing myself to film music scores. I wrote my first children’s book in 2020 titled,” Christmas Snow”. I will be wetting more in the next few years.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
I was a shy and timid kid. Even though I had a lot of self-confidence. I grew up living football because of the 90s Dallas Cowboys.
