Community Highlights: Meet Victor Wong

Today we’d like to introduce you to Victor Wong. Them and their team share their story with us below:

Victor Wong is a futurist, inventor, and entrepreneur. Born in Hong Kong, Mr. Wong left home and traveled to the United States at the tender age of seven. Upon arrival in Los Angeles, Mr. Wong lived with his uncle and aunt and, after a few short months, decided to stay. From this auspicious beginning, Mr. Wong quickly developed a passion for music, technology, and the American dream.

Education in Los Angeles was an interesting proposition for Mr. Wong as he attended ESL (English as a second language) classes in the first grade but was placed into 4th-grade math. Within the Los Angeles school programs, Mr. Wong first discovered his love for music and picked up the violin. As in any typical Asian family, Mr. Wong was made to study and practice his violin many hours each day to the point that Mr. Wong was invited to join the district orchestra in the second grade. It’s conceivable through this rigorous regiment of continual violin practicing that Mr. Wong decided to take a left turn and became a drummer instead when his parents finally had to immigrate to the U.S. four years later. Mr. Wong’s high school years were spent in Houston, Texas, where his parents had settled down. Mr. Wong served as the captain of the drum corps for his high school marching band and first seat for the school’s orchestra and marching band. It was also during this time Mr. Wong first became aware of computers. He and other accelerated-class students were given access to computers to work and explore with. Mr. Wong’s love of technology found fertile ground in the school’s science fairs. His winning entries included computer software that mimics a teacher teaching math and English subjects and design and constructed a CO2 laser he inadvertently used to short out all of the electricity at the family-operated restaurant during dinner rush hour. Mr. Wong attended the University of Texas at Austin and graduated with a degree in Economics. It has always been a dream for Mr. Wong to create new technologies and head his own company. Upon graduation, Mr. Wong did precisely that. The following is a short list of his achievements in the last decade.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road is always challenging and challenging. I’ve had to deal with virtually anything anyone can think of. The important thing is always to get back up and keep trying. Otherwise, your journey comes to a quick end, no matter your ultimate goal when you first started.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
For San Antonio, I love the city’s history, culture, and diversity. For one to move forward, there has to be a history, and San Antonio has that in abundance. The people are also friendly and accommodating. It can be a slower pace of life but just as fascinating and compelling as any other popular city in the U.S.
