Community Highlights: Meet Tiffany Jones of Hair by Tiffany Nichole

Today we’d like to introduce you to Tiffany Jones.

Hi Tiffany, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstories with our readers?
I am originally from Maryland but grew up in Hampton, Virginia. I then joined the United States Air Force at 18, where I served for 14 years on active duty.

I taught myself how to braid as a child and I continue to teach myself new techniques and skills to stay relevant. Once I separated from the military, I taught myself how to hand stitch wigs as a way to stay home with my newborn twins but still have that income coming in.

I moved to San Antonio in 2020 and I finally completed my cosmetology training at Paul Mitchell The School San Antonio.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Being in this industry has not always been smooth. I sometimes have a hard time separating work life and home life. I also try to be accommodating to clients/guests because I understand, that they cannot always take off of work to get their hair done, and sometimes our schedules don’t match up.

I think it comes down to respect. Respect my time, and I will respect your time. I know that back in the day women would spend all day at the hair salon. I would like to be a part of the solution to try to change that stereotype.

While I will respect your time by only booking you and focusing on you, getting you in and out in the amount of time it will require to do your hair (yes, sometimes you will still be there all day depending on the service(s) booked); respect my time and know that I do have a family that I would like to spend quality time with as well.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
I am very passionate about hair. I love all of the creativity and manipulation that can be done for fun, fashion, or just everyday life.

I specialize in natural hair and protective hairstyling. My most booked service is the hand-tied crochet braids. Crochet braids in general are an easy hairstyle to maintain.

I also love doing sew-in extensions; almost all kinds of extensions. I love to see hair thrive and grow. I created my hair oil, Juices, and Berries, that I sell especially for everyone that wears protective hairstyles so that they can continue to moisturize their hair when it’s put away.

I also perform color services, I hand stitch custom wigs, silk presses, and trims and I also do cornrows and box braids. There are tons more services that I perform, but these are the most requested.

I’ve been in this industry for quite some time, and in the military, I have had the opportunity to learn all types of hair types and textures firsthand. So when I finally attended cosmetology school, it was more so learning the chemistry of color and how color truly works.

I want everyone that reads this to know that I would love to do your hair. But definitely schedule a consultation. I cherish the relationships that I build with my clients because I need to know them to understand what makes them feel beautiful.

If I know what makes them feel beautiful, the execution and finishing of the style will make us appreciate each other more. I don’t want to just be known as a really good stylist, but one that listens and delivers. Not everyone’s chemistry will match, and that’s alright.

Keep looking until you do find that stylist that you connect with.

Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
If you are just starting out in this industry, listen to your clients. Once they say what they have to say, take it in. Back their words against what they are trying to achieve and how you plan to execute.

Sometimes the smallest things will make their day. That means you listened to them. Make them feel like they aren’t just another client. Yes, we are professionals, but we are also still teachable.

I’ve learned from some of my clients. I’ve become a better stylist over the years from taking in my client’s comments, concerns, and mistakes I’ve made. Stick with it if this is what you are truly passionate about.

Not all clients are meant to be your clients. Set boundaries. Let them go elsewhere if they choose to. Not all money is good money.
