Community Highlights: Meet Patricia Ptak of Counseling Center of Boerne

Today we’d like to introduce you to Patricia Ptak.

Hi Patricia, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I wanted to be a chef, plans to study in New York and Paris. My boyfriend at the time (husband of 31 years) asked me not to go. Off to college I went, no clue what to study. Biology and Psychology were tied as interest areas. Abnormal psychology tipped that scale and I took a deep dive into my major of Child developmental psychology. Worked with folks with severe brain injuries (had no clue if I’d like working with people) fell into the role of a helper and it felt amazing. Masters in Counseling back in the days of in person classes and no computer or Chat GTP. Worked at University of Michigan in TBI and SCI rehab. Went into private practice when my husband began travelling internationally as a creative director. Life was wonderful and full of kids and lots of activities. Fast forward tro 2015 when my husband’s company impolded and we. moved to Texas. I worked for the local MHDD and a behavioral hospital. My mom was diagnosed with an inoperable brain tumor and needed help, so I went into private practice again to be there for my family. I was trained in EMDR in 2018, certified in 2021. It’s been the most amazing career shift for me as it actually helps people heal.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Bahahah thats funny, I had a bad wreck when a kid totaled my jeep when I was 4 months pregnant with our first son. That led to back and neck injuried so bad my epidural failed during my second son’s delivery 3 years later. We had to sell our house and move 1500 miles away for my husband’s job as a Technical designer for James Avery. I lost both of my little fur babies due to old age. I struggled with health issues due to the stres of my mom’s illness and all the travel and chaos it brought to my life. I was diagnosed with breast cancr last year. I am a survivor and have managed to thrive despite challenging and horrible experiences. This gives me greater capactiy to hold space for others who are struggling. I had a huge surgery this year that required a long recovery, I’m back to Pilates at Longevity 4-5 days a week and feel better than ever.
