Community Highlights: Meet Kassandra Levay of Child Advocacy Access Services

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kassandra Levay.

Hi Kassandra, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am a special education advocate. I went into advocacy because my son had multiple disabilities and was not receiving the services and supports that he needed. I went all the way to federal court to make sure he had the necessary supports to be successful. Today he is a marriage and family therapist and he does wonderfully. If I had known then what I know now, I never would have had to go that far. However, I have made it my mission to help other families so they don’t have to go that far to help their children. It is a vital part of who I am and what we do as part of my agency. I pursued multiple degrees and training in this field in order to be a part of making children’s lives better.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It has not been a smooth road to get here. I have been doing this for over 20 years. I fought my son’s school district all the way to federal court. The. children that I see suffering even today, the disparities in racial and economic inequalities are heartbreaking. The funding cuts to education are a huge part of the struggles as well. Teachers are underpaid and under-resourced. I empathize with the plight of teachers but they still have to do their job and help children. The changing laws are also an obstacle since we have to adjust from year to year in order to get children the help that they need.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Our agency provides special education advocacy for children with special needs. We also provide supervision for parents who can’t be alone with their children due to court order or agreements. We provide personalized service and our goal is to ensure the welfare of children at all times in all ways possible. I am most proud of the children we have helped and how far they have gone. I would love for readers to know how dedicated we are to helping children achieve their goals and become independent, functioning adults.

What matters most to you?
Protecting children is what matters most to me and everyone who works with me. Watching my son struggle as well as other children has made it clear to me that children need adults whose sole priority is their welfare. Even in the school setting, schools are split with regard to their priorities. Hving an advocate ensures that the children’s needs are front and center at all times.
