Community Highlights: Meet Karla Lucero of KAYULU ♡ BEAUTY

Today we’d like to introduce you to Karla Lucero

Hi Karla, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Thank you for allowing me to share my journey once again on Voyage SA. I first shared my story back in July 2022, but I’d like to expand on how it all began and the growth I’ve experienced since then.

I’m a 26-year-old licensed cosmetologist specializing in makeup artistry based in San Antonio, TX, though I’m originally from Las Vegas, NV.

My passion for the beauty industry runs deep. I’ve been freelancing for a little over six years, but my interest began as a little girl. For me, makeup and hair have always been more than just tools to enhance beauty—they’ve been about empowering others to feel beautiful, having fun with creative expression, and finding a therapeutic outlet through artistry.

After graduating high school, I decided to pursue my dreams and enrolled in the Cosmetology program at Ogle School in San Antonio in 2018. I completed the program’s required 1,500 hours and took my written exam shortly after. Little did I know, the journey ahead would come with unexpected challenges and demand perseverance I hadn’t yet imagined.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Honestly, no. It has not been smooth—if anything, it has been a long, rocky, bumpy road with so many hurdles and blocks along the way. There were many times I contemplated whether this path was even for me, often thinking I had made a mistake in my career choice. Just like all growth in life, there were obstacles I had to overcome, many of which took a toll on my mental health.

On the road to becoming a licensed cosmetologist, I was required to take a written and practical exam after completing the required hours. I figured it wouldn’t be that big of a deal and the licensing process would be simple—but I was so wrong.

After countless attempts at passing my written exam, I found myself stuck in a cycle of frustration and self-doubt. Each failure felt heavier than the last, leaving me stagnant and questioning my abilities. The fear of trying again—and failing—convinced me to step back, and for a while, I felt defeated.

But this wasn’t the end of my story. After taking a long break and shifting my mindset, I finally passed the written exam, a breakthrough that reignited my confidence. Fueled by this victory, I poured everything into preparing for the practical exam—and I did it! Looking back, the struggles and failures weren’t roadblocks; they were stepping stones that taught me resilience and the value of persistence.

I owe everything to God, whose guidance and faith have been my foundation. My journey wouldn’t be the same without the unwavering support of my friends, family, colleagues, and loyal clients who share my work and believe in me every step of the way.

I’m especially grateful to my mentor, Juan Torres, whose encouragement and belief in my potential have inspired me to keep striving. and my instructors who taught me in cosmetology.
