Community Highlights: Meet Kamesha Jones of Kreative Thairapy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kamesha Jones.

Hi Kamesha, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My hair journey began around 8 years old and I have loved hair ever since. As a child, I spent my summers with my dad, and one day he had to comb my hair. It was the most hideous hairstyle of life. From that day forward, my mom began to teach me to braid and comb basic hairstyles. I practiced and became really good at it. My nanny was my very first client. She would let me practice on her and wore the braids proudly.

I braided hair through high school after having my first job and realizing working for someone else was just not for me. Fast forward, living in San Antonio for about 3 years when I noticed there weren’t many options for black hair care on my side of town. Friends were always asking if I knew anyone who could braid or if I would be willing to braid their hair. That’s when it clicked, I should start back braiding but here in San Antonio instead. I brainstormed ideas on what I wanted for my brand, how to build a professional clientele, invested in braiding and marketing classes and studied different stylist that were where I would like to be.

Braiding hair is truly my therapy. It’s soothing and relaxing for me and I’m basically a part-time therapist so it’s perfect. I have expanded my brand and started an all-natural healthy hair care line that is perfect for natural hair, relaxed hair and protective styles. I have taken all of the tools I have learned over the years and applied them to my own brand. Now, I have my very own private braid studio. It’s cute, comfortable, clean, and personable. The best decision I could have ever made.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Entrepreneurship is a struggle in itself. If you don’t work, you don’t eat. Literally. It took me 3 years to gain the confidence to leave my full-time management job and pursue braiding full time. Building clientele is not an easy task. Women are serious about their hair and not many people are willing to give the newbie in town a try. There were many slow days when I would have 1 or no clients at all.

There were days when I would have multiple no-call, no-shows. I’ve had someone dispute a charge after receiving services. I learned not take those things to heart and take it as a lesson learned. The biggest struggle overall was my self-doubt and letting others talk me out of doing what was really best for me. Each struggle turned into a lesson that made me greater.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Kreative Thairapy?
Kreative Thairapy is a private braid studio, specializing in Knotless Braids and Healthy Hair Care. I am the only stylist, as it is a more personable experience. I am #TeamNaturalHair 100%. We must get in tune with our hair and I am here to help you with that. Healthy hair growth starts with a healthy scalp and all services start at the shampoo bowl and include braiding hair. Shampooing hair is oddly satisfying for me.

I am most proud of how far I have come since I started my business in San Antonio. From being a home-based stylist to working in a big salon to now having my own private braid studio. I have to toot my own horn! My clients make me feel like the best with the excitement after each style like it’s the first time all over again. The automatic confidence boost is the best. The growth of my all-natural hair care line is also a huge accomplishment.

I love that I am able to help others maintain a healthy scalp, bring edges back, and retain length. You must care for what’s underneath the protective styles. With the different natural hair classes that I have invested in, I am able to give my clients the knowledge they need to maintain their hair at home in-between times.

My clients love me, the experience, and of course the hairstyles. Always being my true self is what sets me apart from others. I am genuinely honest and passionate about hair care and my clients appreciate that. I take pride in everything I do. Services include soothing shampoo, braiding hair, beads, bows, and hair jewelry.

What quality or characteristic do you feel is most important to your success?
My drive and willpower to become an exclusive master braider play a huge role in my success. I know what I want and I will work overtime until I get it. I was determined to get my private braid studio in 3 months and it was done in 1.5 months. My brand will be so big that not everyone has access.

I have invested in myself to expand my skill set and knowledge. I am always researching tutorials for new styles to try. I make goals each month that are harder than the last to push myself to become the best.

I have been a client of Kamesha’s since 2015…I lived in Texas then moved to Florida and flew back to get my hair done. I live in Vegas now and still have gone back to her to get my hair done. She is amazing! #haircare #kreativethairapy
