Community Highlights: Meet Johanna Montenegro of The Mindful Collective Studio

Today we’d like to introduce you to Johanna Montenegro.

Hi Johanna, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My journey to becoming a Mental Health Professional has been a long and challenging road, but so rewarding and full of beautiful surprises.

I completed my graduate studies in 2015 and became fully licensed as a Licensed Professional Counselor with the state of Texas shortly after. I opened my private therapy practice, Whole Life Healing Holistic Therapies, in 2016. In my private practice, I specialize in working with women who are looking to heal from relational trauma (childhood wounds and toxic relationships).

In 2021, I became the owner of The Mindful Collective Mental Wellness Studio (formerly Boerne Yoga). The Mindful Collective Studio incorporates mindful movement, meditation, and holistic practices with a focus on supporting and improving the student’s mental wellbeing. This is done by providing opportunities to participate in classes and groups with other like-minded individuals.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road here has been less than smooth. I started out this journey as a single parent (had my daughter at 19), going to school full time and working full time while also raising her. I got married in 2013, had two more kids, and have recently become a single mom again. Navigating my own healing journey while holding space for others has been challenging at times but has taught me so much.

Raising three girls and two businesses isn’t easy, but I wouldn’t change it.

The concept of this studio was planted in my heart 10 years ago when I was in grad school, and it has slowly over the years taken shape to what it is today. It was born out of a very broken place in my own life and finding myself in a yoga studio that was healing my soul from the immense grief I had experienced and in therapy, office healing psychological wounds that had been caused.

After that experience in my own personal life, I knew I wanted to create a space where people could find community and grow friendships, while also healing their hearts and growing into their fullness.

As you know, we’re big fans of The Mindful Collective Studio. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
The Mindful Collective provides an array of opportunities for individuals to connect deeper to themselves and to connect with others, all with the purpose of encouraging inner healing and growth.

We do this by offering yoga and aerial yoga classes, meditation, special events, self-care support, and will be expanding our services in the near future to offer holistic wellness coaching.

We are the first studio in the Boerne/SA area to be considered a Mental Wellness Studio (that we know of and have researched) and the first owned by a licensed mental health professional, Registered Yoga Teacher, and proudly Latina-Owned. As the owner of a unique space, I not only understand the importance of the mind-body connection but have studied at length and have helped others navigate healing through their traumatic experiences to a life they feel fulfilled in.

As the owner, my deepest desire is for people to feel safe, seen, and understood when they enter our studio. Being trauma-informed and mindful of the experiences each person holds is of great importance.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
We are very interested in collaborating with wellness professionals (yoga instructors, meditation teachers, mental health professionals, etc.) who prioritize mental health and wellness and who are interested in creating a welcoming and supportive experiences for their students.

Whether it is a weekly class, a special event, or an in-studio retreat, our hope is to increase accessibility for those looking for a studio that understands their unique needs. We are dedicated to breaking the stigma around mental health support, along with stereotypes and stigmas around yoga, meditation, and mindfulness. Both are for all to experience.

The best way to support is to share with others that we are here and ready to warmly welcome you, join us for a class or one of our special self-care events.
