Community Highlights: Meet Emily Thometz DVM of Mesquite Equine Hospital

Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Thometz DVM.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Like many little girls, I always wanted to become a veterinarian. I was very lucky after completing undergrad in ag business and animal science to be accepted to veterinary school at the University of Minnesota. I completed veterinary school with a focus on equine studies. Then I moved out of the cold to Arizona where I completed an internship. I moved to Texas for a position at a referral hospital and worked for three different practices in Texas before starting my own practice in November 2023. It has been a challenging process, but wonderful. My practice has grown rapidly and I am so grateful for all of the opportunities.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Some of the largest struggles have been financial – coming out of vet school with lots of debt and then trying to secure a loan for equipment and a brick and mortar practice has been difficult.
Also learning how to manage a business, people and property are all new to me.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about Mesquite Equine Hospital ?
My interests are focused on equine sports medicine, but I do a little bit of everything. I am very lucky to have two associate veterinarians – one who is board certified in internal medicine and one who did an internship in reproduction. We compliment each other well and provide high quality specialized care for all horses.
We provide services on farm as well as at our hospital in Natalia TX.

Can you talk to us a bit about the role of luck?
I feel very lucky to have been able to open my own business and to have grown so quickly. I hope the luck continues!
