Today we’d like to introduce you to Cristina Medrano.
Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
I was working as a dual language kindergarten teacher at Bonham Academy in San Antonio when I noticed many of my students becoming frustrated with the program—they didn’t understand any Spanish, and it was impacting their experience. I realized that if children could be immersed in the Spanish language at an earlier age, the transition into a dual language environment would be smoother and more enjoyable.
That insight inspired me to open my own Spanish immersion nursery and preschool just one block from the school where I taught. I started with just five students, and over time, our little school grew—eventually reaching 85 students with a waitlist.
This September, we’ll be celebrating our twelve-year anniversary. It’s been an incredible journey, and I’m so proud of what we’ve built.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
The journey hasn’t always been smooth. Like any business, we’ve had our ups and downs. Transitioning from teaching to running a business was a huge leap—and honestly, I don’t think I fully knew what I was getting into at the time.
But looking back, I’m so glad I took that leap. I’m incredibly grateful to my family for supporting me and standing by my side every step of the way. I truly couldn’t have done it without them.
There have been challenges—navigating relationships with parents, managing employees, and dealing with the everyday hurdles that come with owning a business. One of the toughest times was during COVID. We left for spring break with a full school, and came back to almost nothing. The uncertainty was overwhelming.
But we made it through. We found a way to survive and keep going—and for that, I’m deeply proud and thankful.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
My business is a Spanish immersion nursery and preschool located in the heart of San Antonio. This September, we’ll be celebrating our twelve-year anniversary.
At MSA, we specialize in introducing children to the Spanish language and Hispanic culture in a warm, nurturing environment. What truly sets us apart is our dedicated team of teachers—many of whom have been with us for years—and the unforgettable events we organize for our amazing MSA families and friends.
One of the things I’m most proud of is the strong reputation MSA has built over the years as one of the top nursery and preschool programs in San Antonio. We pour our hearts into everything we do. The safety, well-being, and happiness of our students are our highest priorities. We genuinely love and care for each and every one of them.
Let’s talk about our city – what do you love? What do you not love?
What I love most about San Antonio is its rich diversity and vibrant culture. The city is truly unique—it has so much heart and soul. I also really enjoy the amazing food and the warm, welcoming people who make this place feel like home.
What I like the least is the car-centric culture. I wish San Antonio were more walkable, with more plazas and green spaces where people could gather, socialize, and enjoy being outdoors. A stronger focus on community spaces would make this already great city even better.
