Today we’d like to introduce you to Colin O’Dea.
Hi Colin, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My background is in emergency medicine, which I have been practicing since 2008. Around 2019 to 2020 I began researching hair restoration to help with my personal hair loss and as I learned more about hair restoration I became more interested in hair restoration as a potential career. Through my research, I discovered that the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery (ISHRS) had a fellowship training program and in 2020 I applied for and was accepted into a fellowship training program with Dr. Carlos Puig of Physician’s Hair Restoration Center in Houston, TX. Dr. Puig has been practicing hair restoration for over 50 years and I was lucky to be learning from someone with such depth of experience. I began my fellowship in 2021, completing the program in 2023. Since finishing my fellowship, I have worked with Dr. Puig in Houston while also working to open my own practice here in San Antonio and continuing to practice emergency medicine. My practice, Premier Hair Restoration, officially opened in spring of 2025. I am excited to be able to provide hair restoration services to San Antonio and the surrounding area.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Opening a new independent practice always includes challenges, particularly for someone doing so for the first time. But overcoming those challenges and completing the many tasks required to set up a new practice has been quite rewarding. Since opening, the biggest challenge has been gaining the exposure needed to bring in new patients. However, by using a multiple advertising avenues, including both digital services such as google and social media sites as well as more traditional advertising avenues such as billboards, we have been able to slowly build the practice into what I want it to be.
We’ve been impressed with Premier Hair Restoration, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
At Premier Hair Restoration, we offer the full spectrum of hair restoration services. This includes surgical hair transplants using both the FUE and FUT harvesting methods, minor procedures such as Regenera Activa therapy and PRP injections, and medical therapy for hair loss. We treat all causes of hair loss in both men and women.
Additionally, using the tools used in FUE surgery, we are able to offer surgical arm pit hair removal, removing both the arm pit hairs and their associated sweat glands, which both eliminates the need to shave and greatly reduces sweating and body odor in the arm pits. Removal of the hairs and sweat glands of the arm pits using this method is a new approach pioneered for treatment of hyperhydrosis, or excessive sweating, of the arm pits. Considering the hot climate here in South Texas, this technique can benefit nearly anyone who wants to stop shaving, significantly decrease arm pit sweating, and significantly decrease body odor.
What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
The most important lesson I’ve learned in my journey to becoming a hair restoration surgeon is how impactful providing hair restoration services can be. Many patients feel significant distress related to their hair loss and being able to help patents get the hair that they want is extremely fulfilling.
