Check Out Vanita Leo’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Vanita Leo

Hi Vanita, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Vanita Leo, and I’m from San Antonio, Texas. Music has always been a central part of my life, as I come from a long line of Tejano musicians. My career is rooted in cumbia music, allowing me to honor my family’s legacy while showcasing my own unique style.

Born in 2002, I grew up during a time when pop culture was evolving rapidly, and that era has heavily influenced my perspective. My music blends those cultural influences, celebrating my heritage and reflecting what it means to be Mexican-American today. For me, it’s all about staying true to my roots and expressing my authentic self.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It hasn’t always been a smooth road, but that’s what makes the journey worthwhile. Growing up, balancing a love for music with the responsibilities of family businesses was a challenge, but it taught me hustle and resilience. There’s also the pressure of carrying on my family’s musical legacy while trying to carve out my own path—honoring tradition while bringing something new to the table.

Being a young Mexican-American artist in a space dominated by established names also comes with its struggles. Sometimes it feels like you have to work twice as hard to prove yourself, especially when blending traditional cumbia with modern influences. But every challenge has shaped me into the artist I am today. Those experiences fuel my music and keep me connected to the culture and community I represent

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My work revolves around cumbia music, where I explore and express my identity as a Mexican-American artist. I specialize in creating a sound that bridges the vibrancy of traditional rhythms with the energy of modern influences. My style is all about experimenting while staying connected to the culture that shaped me.

I’m most proud of how my music reflects who I am—my experiences, my vision, and my voice. It’s a blend of everything I grew up with, from the sounds of San Antonio to the pop culture that shaped my generation.

What sets me apart is my ability to take these diverse influences and turn them into something uniquely mine. I’m not just recreating what’s been done before; I’m reimagining it in a way that feels fresh and true to me. My work is a reflection of where I’ve been and where I’m going, and that’s what makes it special.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
I see the music industry continuing to evolve rapidly over the next 5-10 years, especially with the increasing role of digital platforms and technology. Streaming will keep dominating, and artists will have even more direct ways to connect with fans. I think we’ll see a rise in collaborative projects across genres as boundaries between musical styles continue to blur. Cumbia and other regional genres are already being fused with more mainstream sounds, and I expect that trend to grow as more artists experiment and push creative limits.

Another shift I anticipate is a deeper focus on authenticity and personal storytelling. As listeners continue to crave more meaningful connections with the artists they support, there’ll be more emphasis on music that’s not just for entertainment but also a reflection of identity and culture.

For me, it’s exciting to see where this all goes. I plan to keep evolving with the times while staying true to what makes me unique. I want to be part of the movement that brings Latin music and culture even more into the global spotlight, all while keeping the authenticity of the sound alive.
