Today we’d like to introduce you to Paulina Tascon.
Hi Paulina, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Before the bakery had a name, it started as a way to bring people together. I moved from Colombia to Texas with my family about eleven years ago, and after becoming a stay-at-home mom, I found myself returning to something I had always loved—baking. What began as a hobby in my home kitchen slowly grew through friends, family, and word of mouth into Fairy Dust, a home bakery that has now been part of our community for seven years.
The name “Fairy Dust” was inspired by my daughter’s love of ballet and the little sparkles she called her fairy dust. That same feeling of joy and wonder became the heart of the business. Today, every dessert is made by me, from scratch, with a focus on thoughtful flavors, beautiful presentation, and creating moments that help people celebrate life’s big and small occasions. While the menu and recipes continue to evolve, my goal has always stayed the same: to make people feel cared for through food that is made with intention, warmth, and a little bit of magic.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many small business owners, I started with very limited resources and learned almost everything through trial and error. Every recipe, process, and design has taken time to refine.
One of the biggest challenges has been building a business in a completely different city, country, and culture. I moved from Colombia to the United States without an established network or a deep understanding of the local market. I had to learn not only how to run a business, but also how to connect with customers whose traditions, tastes, and expectations were often different from what I was used to. Earning trust and finding my place in a new community took time, patience, and persistence.
Another challenge has been staying true to my vision instead of following every trend. I’ve always wanted Fairy Dust to be known for quality, thoughtful details, and desserts that feel personal rather than mass-produced. Building that kind of brand takes time, consistency, and the willingness to grow slowly.
Looking back, those challenges have shaped the business into what it is today. They taught me resilience, creativity, and the importance of never stopping learning. Every obstacle has helped me become a better baker and a better business owner.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
At Fairy Dust, I create handcrafted desserts and pastries that celebrate life’s meaningful moments. Every item is made from scratch in small batches, using high-quality ingredients and thoughtful techniques. My menu ranges from decorated cakes and dessert boxes to cookies, brownies, alfajores, pastries, and seasonal specialties, but my goal has always been the same: to create desserts that are just as memorable as the occasion they’re made for.
I think what I’m most known for is the attention to detail. Whether it’s a custom birthday kit, an elegant cake with edible flowers, or a box of cookies, I believe every order deserves the same level of care. I love combining beautiful presentation with flavors that feel comforting, balanced, and homemade.
What I’m most proud of is that every customer has helped Fairy Dust grow through trust and word of mouth. As a one-person business, every recipe, every decoration, every social media post, and every customer interaction comes directly from me. Knowing that families choose my desserts to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, and everyday moments is something I never take for granted.
What sets Fairy Dust apart is that I don’t just sell desserts—I create experiences. I enjoy adding thoughtful details that make people feel seen and celebrated, whether it’s personalized packaging, carefully curated birthday kits, or flavors inspired by my Colombian roots and my life in Texas. My hope is that every box someone opens brings a sense of warmth, joy, and connection, because those are the memories that last long after the last bite.
What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
One of the things I love most about San Antonio is its strong sense of community. People genuinely enjoy supporting local businesses, and I’ve been fortunate to experience that firsthand through Fairy Dust. It’s also a city that celebrates culture, family, and food, which makes it a wonderful place for a small bakery. I appreciate how San Antonio embraces both its rich traditions and its growing diversity, creating opportunities for entrepreneurs from different backgrounds to feel welcome.
If I had to choose one challenge, it would be that San Antonio is so spread out. As a home-based bakery that offers pickup, it can be difficult to reach customers across the city, and distance can sometimes be a barrier for small businesses. Even so, the support and kindness of the community have made it a place I’m proud to call home.
