Today we’d like to introduce you to Patricia Vonne.
Hi Patricia , thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My name is Patricia Vonne born and raised in San Antonio,TX now living in Austin, TX.
I started my band in 1998 when I was living in the concrete canyons of New York City where I was pursuing the arts. I had transplanted Texans in my band and we played the musical circuit there (CBGB’s, Mercury Lounge, The China Club) until I moved back to my native Texas in 2001. I played my first SXSW showcase in 1999 at the Liberty Lunch. I toured Europe as a member of Tito and Tarantula ( the vampire band featured in the film From Dusk Till Dawn) in 2002 then made my debut self titled album in 2003. I was always inspired by the music of Buddy Holly, Cruzados, Lone Justice, The Stray Cats, Pat Benatar, & Mariachi music. My first live concert was Johnny Reno & the Sax Maniacs from Fort Worth, Texas which changed my life forever.
I toured internationally including the prestiguous Montreux Jazz Festival in Switzerland, World Expo in Japan,John F Kennedy Center, Grand Ole Opry & United Nations Headquarters in NYC.
I have appreared on the big screen in Spykids,Desperado, Machete Kills, Four Rooms, and Sin City: A Dame to Kill For reprising my role as Dallas/Zorro Girl. My song “Traeme Paz” was featured on the motion picture soundtrack Once Upon a Time in Mexico.
I have shared the stage with Los Lobos, Texas Tornadoes, Chris Isaak, & collaborated with Texas musical heavy weights such as Charlie Sexton, Alejandro Escovedo, Joe Ely, Rosie Flores, Doyle Bramhall & Flaco Jimenez.
I released my 8th studio album “My Favorite Holiday” during the covid pandemic which featured 10 original Christmas songs. It included co-writes with Rubén Blades, David Grissom, Rosie Flores and an all star cast of musicians. My first live album was released last year and I am currently recording my 10th album for a Spring 2026 release. The title track is a song i co-wrote with my musical heroes Johnny Reno and Chris Isaak. It’s called “My Heart’s Got A Mind Of It’s Own.”
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
I have always been an indie girl. I have always released all my albums on my own label “Bandolera Records” which means female bandit. The challenges were usually raising the money or taking bank loans out to pay for the production, musicians, PR Firm, Studio hours and all that goes into an official album release. Writing the songs was never a challenge for me, thankfully.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I love incorporating dance and my spanish castanets in my live show.
All my albums are bilingual because it’s my way of preserving and honoring the rich cultural heritage of my upbringing in San Antonio, and celebrating my heritage through music.
I am most proud of the incredible musicians i have collaborated with. I also am proud of all the music videos i have been fortunate to make including my 2D stop motion animations that have won awards internationally.
I love branching out and began my film career in animation using stop-motion photography. I took home the Best Animation Award at the Madrid International Film Festival for Huerta de San Vicente, an homage to Spanish poet Federico García Lorca.
My Animation “Paris Trance” won “Excellent Animation Award” at the San Francisco International New Concept Film Festival & nominated by Paris Independent Film Fest, Paris Short Film Festival & Madrid International Film Festival.
My first short film, Cold Dark Hollow, debuted in my mother’s hometown at the El Paso Film Festival and stars my sister Angela Lanza. Winner of Best Women Empowerment Short at Paris International Film Festival 2021 & 4 Best Actress Awards including the Cannes International Independent Film Festival & New York International Independent Film Fest.
What’s next?
I am thrilled to be recording my 10th album which features the title track co-written with my musical heroes Chris Isaak and Johnny Reno. ( Johnny played saxophone for Chris Isaak for many years and fronted his own band for many years as well.) My producer is Rick Del Castillo at Smilin Castle Studios in Kyle, Tx.
I feel blessed to be from San Antonio for it’s rich cultural menudo of sounds and flavors and it’s one of the most important cities for Latin music in America. Being one of 10 children in a Mexican American family, my parents always encouraged music in the house. It’s always been my mission to preserve and honor my heritage through my music.
I am also honored to be able to pursue my passion in music, dance and film. I love to cross pollinate my talents and not limit myself. I love diversity. It keeps life interesting and keeps me on my toes.
