Today we’d like to introduce you to Margaret Baker.
Margaret, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My partner Josh and I started Shy Coyote Farm back in 2022. We originally met when we were working together on an organic farm in Oregon. We had a shared love of farming, animals. music and art. We had each been working in the agricultural/horticultural world for many years. When a family event required us to move back to San Antonio, where I am originally from, we took the opportunity to use all of our skills and knowledge acquired over the years to start our own small farm. Things have been up and down since we began, but overall after 3+ years we are still going strong!
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There are many challenges to being a farmer. Its dangerous, low-paying, the work is tiring and food trends are always shifting. Growing in South Texas adds its own special twist. The famously intense heat, poisonous insects and snakes, and stinging thorny plants make the job of farming that much more difficult. But we love what we do and believe that the work is important for the world so we keep pushing forward.
We all have a different way of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
My personal definition of success is to simply live a life where you do the least harm to others as possible, while caring deeply for yourself. I do not define success by money or power or status. Those things are transient and will all be lost when we die. I prefer to enjoy the world and feel deep gratitude every day for even being here.
