Today we’d like to introduce you to Jenn Brookover.
Hi Jenn, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Hi! I’m Jenn, and I am a newborn, maternity, and family photographer in San Antonio, Texas. My passion is capturing fleeting memories of expanding bellies and curly newborns for growing families. Over the past 20 years, I have photographed over 2,000 (and counting) newborns in their homes.
Originally from St. Louis, I moved to San Antonio after college and spent the next eight years as an outside sales representative, trying to juggle working and new motherhood. I was then blessed to stay home with my four boys, who were my first little subjects (yes, all boys!). I fell in love with documenting every memory, and began working for a few scrapbook magazines, doing layout and design. Along the way, my photography skills grew, and I convinced some friends to let me photograph their babies, and Jenn Brookover Photography was born.
Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
Portrait photography has changed so much over the past few decades! When I first started my business, photographers only offered prints and physical products (files were still considered “negatives” at that time). Now, people want their files (and I want them to have them!). But, I also want them to have heirloom-quality portraits to enjoy on their walls, albums for children to turn the pages of, and something to pass on to the next generation besides their phone. My clients are thrilled when I deliver their beautiful, customized artwork, crafted from their cherished memories.
Newborn photography is a very specialized niche. We spend hours with the family and are often among the first people to see the baby, as sessions are typically held within the first few weeks after the baby is born. One of the challenges I face is helping prospective clients understand the importance of choosing a photographer who has experience handling tiny babies, posing them properly, and remaining patient throughout the session.
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
When I started my business, there were very few “at-home” photographers (and even fewer newborn AND at-home photographers) in San Antonio. I love helping clients discover that their home can be the backdrop for their photos, even if it’s not “perfect.” This also allows new families to stay comfortable at home with their new little ones, eliminating the need for packing up the car or taking the baby out in the elements.
Part of my newborn photography service includes providing everything we need for the baby, which also helps ease new parents’ worries about getting ready for the session. All they need to do is feed the baby, and I take care of the rest. I also offer gowns for expectant mothers during their maternity session. Each session, whether it’s newborn, maternity, milestone, or family photography, is truly custom!
Over the years, I’ve been featured in numerous magazines, taken photos of celebrities and local athletes with their babies, and won numerous awards. However, the most special moments have been during sessions when I am overcome with the feeling of holding a brand-new life in my hands. My goal will always be to create beautiful memories of precious little ones that are both artistic and genuine. I try to create images during your session that will stir your soul and take you right back to those early days. I want parents to have memories of their newborn’s crinkled nose, expressions, tiny toes and hands, and even sweet, flaky skin.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
When I was starting out, I would take every session that came my way. This can easily lead to burnout and make it challenging to have a work/life balance. Niching down to what you truly love allows you to become an expert in whatever that is!
I’d also recommend partnering with local businesses that share your same vision. We’ve loved working with Nursery Couture to offer our clients a chance to join us throughout the years for specialty mini-sessions. This also lets parents keep up with photos throughout the year without having to book an entire session.
