Today we’d like to introduce you to Ema Rodriguez.
Hi Ema , please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started Weird Corpus in 2019. The intent was to showcase local underground artists and unique businesses in an inexpensive and accessible way. What began as a nine page zine and quickly evolved into markets, festivals and experiences. Countless artists and small businesses credit us as a catalyst into making their part time passions their full time profession.
Weird Corpus is definitely my passion but my profession (and purpose) is with my spirit led business Skeleton Key Curios. I started by reading cards for myself and a few friends and within a few months it transitioned into a full time profession and storefront.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
When we first started creating and curating for Weird Corpus, there was so much promise. We established ourselves quickly and saw all of the potential 2020 had to bring. Like most people, we didn’t anticipate was a global pandemic. We had to adjust to new mediums of showcasing locals quickly!
Skeleton Key Curios was born out of necessity. When the pandemic hit, I found myself needed new avenues of income to fulfill my financial responsibilities. In the moment, it felt like a huge risk leaving my full time job. I took a deep breath, jumped in and gave it my all!
Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I consider myself a spiritual worker, event coordinator and curator. I am known for creating unique and immersive experiences and I believe that’s what sets me apart from others. I am proud to do this while also making these experiences accessible.
What were you like growing up?
Growing up, I was a dorky and sassy kid! I loved entertaining through music and exploring art.
Most of my family indulged my love of oddities. Books on ghosts, aliens, and all things paranormal introduced me to the esoteric world I reside in now.
My Uncle was a huge influence and frequently took me to book stores, movies, and experiences like ghost hunts as a kid. I credit him for introducing me to artistic scenes I’m a part of today! Some of my best memories are visiting museums and art and theater camps as a kid!
