Today we’d like to introduce you to Edgar Martinez.
Hi Edgar, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I started tattooing a little over 3 years ago; tattooing was a hobby. I used to watch my uncle’s tattoo growing up, so I grew up always curious about how tattooing worked, from prepping your area and machine, the stencil transfer to the type of needles used for the project. I never knew that tattooing would be a career for me. About 3 years ago, I got an opportunity to start tattooing at a local shop, and since then, I have not looked back. I enjoy doing all types and styles of tattoos, from black and grey to full color. I recently decided to open my shop; this is the newest chapter in my life. I feel blessed to have the people I do by my side through this unique experience, as they have encouraged me to keep my head held high and to pursue my goals and my opportunity to live out my American Dream.
We all face challenges, but would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
The biggest obstacles are set by ourselves. Fear of failure has been and is the biggest obstacle I’ve had to face. But without any risk, there will be no reward, and if you build it, they will come. So here we are, giving it our best.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. What can you tell our readers who might need to be more familiar with what you do?
I tattoo for a living; I enjoy tattooing all different styles. I recently opened my tattoo shop. I named it Black Sheep Ink, and we’re located on the west side of San Antonio. I am proud of my roots and family; I wouldn’t be who I am today without them. And I’m just a guy who truly enjoys what he does. I pride myself in my work and enjoy my customers’ satisfaction when they see artwork that will be on their bodies forever. Here at our shop, we also have an aspiring artist named Nalette Rondon, which everyone should check out; she has custom random flash pieces that she’d love to tattoo! Also, in the shop, Bruce is a chocolate lab and is Nalette’s service dog. He’s cool.
Where we are in life is often partly because of others. Who/what else deserves credit for how your story turned out?
My son, John, has had my back since day 1. My aunt Elisa and my uncle Ariel my cousins, Itzel, Laissa, Melissa, Miguel, Oscar, and Carlos, and my sister Idania are always supporting me with words of encouragement and sharing my posts contributing to the success of my dream. Also, Nalette Rondon and Lizeth Lopez gave my shop a chance when they knew starting a new business from the ground up would be hard, but they still helped and kept helping me daily. My buddy Angel Soto helped me start everything up. And, of course, our customers who have supported us are busy.
