Check Out Dr. J. Desiree Rodriguez’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dr. J. Desiree Rodriguez

Hi Dr. J. Desiree, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I began my entrepreneurial journey at 22 with a mission to support young women through mentorship, founding Always a Lady First. Through this program, I mentored over 150 young ladies across Texas and Florida, guiding them in personal development and empowerment. When the pandemic reshaped my path, I decided to close the mentorship program and opened J. Desiree LLC, a consulting business that offers book distribution services, communication consulting, and keynote speaking.

Later, driven by my passion for literacy and community impact, I founded Literature Matters, a nonprofit organization dedicated to inspiring diverse children to read. Through Literature Matters, we host events and festivals that encourage young readers to see themselves reflected in books, fostering a love for reading and a connection to stories that celebrate their unique backgrounds.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been a fulfilling journey, but not without its challenges. Starting Always a Lady First to mentor young women was both rewarding and demanding. For example, working and going to school full-time, managing, finding funding, and like-minded people, was difficult. Then, when the pandemic hit, I had to make the difficult decision to close the program. Pivoting from mentorship to launching J. Desiree LLC brought its own learning curve as I adapted to consulting, book distribution, and public speaking.

Literature Matters was born from a vision to fill gaps I saw in diverse children’s access to inspiring books, but building it from the ground up also had its struggles—especially with funding and logistics for our events and festivals. Each step has required persistence, adaptability, and the ability to overcome setbacks, but these challenges have only strengthened my commitment to my work and the communities I serve.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I’m Dr. J. Desiree Rodriguez, an Afro-Latina entrepreneur, author, and content creator with a deep commitment to empowering others through literacy, mentorship, and storytelling. My work began with founding *Always a Lady First*, where I mentored over 150 young women across Texas and Florida, supporting their personal growth and empowerment. Later, I launched *J. Desiree LLC*, offering book distribution, strategic communication consulting, and keynote speaking. As an award-winning author with a doctorate in Strategic Communication, I also serve as a content creator, collaborating with brands to share stories that make an impact.

One of my proudest achievements is founding *Literature Matters*, a nonprofit literacy outreach festival that, for three years, has connected diverse children with books and stories that reflect their experiences. My own journey with reading challenges drives my dedication to ensuring every child feels represented in literature. This work has opened doors to meaningful connections and has allowed me to advocate for diversity in reading.

What sets me apart is my unique blend of roles—entrepreneur, author, and content creator—each guided by a passion for inclusion and empowerment. Through my social platforms, I engage with everything from tall fashion to lifestyle, reaching my audience with genuine and inspiring content. I’m proud that each step, from mentoring young women to leading community-centered initiatives, has been driven by my commitment to representation, literacy, and personal growth.

We’d love to hear about any fond memories you have from when you were growing up?
My favorite childhood memory is becoming an author at 17. After that moment, I knew I had the courage and tenacity to achieve anything I set my mind to.
