Today we’d like to introduce you to DaNisha Turner.
Hi DaNisha, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself
Wow! Where do I start? Thank you for this opportunity.
My name is DaNisha Turner, but I like to go by DaNisha Nicole. I’m a licensed cosmetologist and the owner of Chic Strandz By DaNisha Nicole.
Here’s my story…
I was born and raised in the heart of Memphis, TN, which is South Memphis of course lol. Who knew a little girl from the projects would make it this far? My journey of becoming a successful cosmetologist started around the age of 5 years old. I remember going to the salon with my mother watching her hairstylist work her magic. Tammy is her name and I learned a lot from just watching her. She would tell my mom that she’s never seen a child sit so quietly.
One of those days I decided to get up out of my seat to get a closer look. I heard my mom tell me to come to sit down, but Tammy replied “She’s okay, you never know she might be a hairstylist one day.” From that day, Tammy’s words stuck with me. At the age of 10, I taught myself how to braid and that’s when I knew for a fact I was going to be a hairstylist. I was a young girl that enjoyed art, science, and math. If you ask me that’s all I needed. Despite the naysayers that told me being a hairstylist wasn’t a real career, I chose to allow them to eat their own words.
At the age of 15, I was doing everybody’s hair. I didn’t care who it was, I just wanted to do what made me happy. Being so young I had already been through so much, and doing hair has always brought me peace. I’ve been doing hair consistently since then and I haven’t stopped. In the year 2015, Chic Strandz By DaNisha Nicole was birthed. I vowed to never let anyone tell me what I couldn’t do. Though I’ve had my struggles once I became a mother to two beautiful boys, I pushed myself.
I passed both of my state board exams on the first try. When it comes to hair I can look at something and just do it. I decided to step out on faith and move me and my babies to San Antonio in August of 2019. I’ve been working for myself since the first week of being here, and I must say San Antonio has been great to Chic Strandz By DaNisha Nicole.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it hasn’t been smooth at all. This has been one of the rockiest roads I’ve ever driven on, but I wouldn’t change anything.
No one prepares you for the wear and tear on your body from the long days at work. I was diagnosed with anxiety in 2020, and that’s a struggle in itself when I’m at the salon. I’m a single mother of two and sometimes I have to juggle work and parenting at the same time.
My boys have had to sit at the salon while I work day after day due to it just being me, but I feel I tough it out very well. Being a one-woman show for right now is not easy. I’ve been telling myself I need an assistant, but when the time is right God will provide me with who I need.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
As of now, I’m a mini salon owner, but opening a full-service salon is in the near future.
When you come to sit in my chair it’s a must that you leave happy and satisfied. I’m that stylist that likes to build a family with my clients because you never know what the next person is going through. I specialize in all things healthy hair no matter if you’re natural or chemically treated. I am well known for my silk presses, colorist skills, and short pixie cuts. Building a real and true relationship with each of my clients, and also educating them through the service sets me apart from others.
Adding to someone’s happiness brings me joy in this business.
Be YOU, Be CHIC!!!
We love surprises, fun facts, and unexpected stories. Is there something you can share that might surprise us?
A lot of people don’t know that I’m extremely shy and such an introvert, but it never gets in the way of my passion for hair.
