Check Out Cameron Hawkins’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cameron Hawkins.

Hi Cameron, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work life, how can you bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I grew up in Northwest San Antonio and attended Communications Arts High School. I was interested in broadcast journalism and attended the University of Texas at Austin, ultimately majoring in English. After graduation, I started a blog called “South Kongress,” named after a popular shopping district in downtown Austin. I eventually started writing/podcasting for Pro Wrestling Torch and would also write for various online sites and magazines, most notably Pro Wrestling Illustrated. In August 2022, I was hired to write about professional wrestling for The Ringer, the longtime home of fellow San Antonio native Shea Serrano. I write about talent and events for World Wrestling Entertainment, All Elite Wrestling, and other local/independent promotions.

Can you talk to us about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned? Looking back, would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not. I wasn’t hired to write full-time until almost 15 years of blogging. Most places pay you in “exposure,” and not everyone can be their own manager. Making time when you have a separate full-time career and expect to maintain friendships/relationships is also challenging.

As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might need to become more familiar, what can you tell them about what you do?
I’m a writer covering professional wrestling. I’m well-known on Twitter for my opinions on the wrestling business and individual events. I’m most proud of interviewing and writing about Steve Borden, more commonly known as the professional wrestling “Sting,” who I’ve been a fan of most of my life. What sets me apart is relatability. I want to write like I’m conversing with a close friend; whatever the subject is, it’s something you should feel. I’m interested in what makes people think and feel, so I convey that through the written word.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
I learned patience. Everyone suddenly had to adjust to being unable to work on projects in person, so utilizing things like zoom became vital. I also had to adjust to people’s schedules in a way I hadn’t previously.
