Rising Stars: Meet Kristen Spangler

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristen Spangler.

Hi Kristen, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I have always had a love of working in retail. My first jobs as a teenager were in various stores in our local mall. I just remember being so mesmerized by the setups in the window display to how much I loved visiting with people at the cash register. I’m naturally chatty so retail was always a good fit for me.

My husband was on active duty Air Force so we traveled all over and keeping a job for any length of time was not easy. However, retail was just a natural fit for our lifestyle. During a particularly tough time in my life, I needed something for myself, something that was just mine.

I had always wanted to learn how to sew, so I bought myself a sewing and embroidery machine. I stayed up late reading books and watching youtube videos on the machine. I found out very quickly that sewing was not for me but I had a real love for embroidery. I loved the detail and intricacies of each little stitch. I was absolutely hooked. I had a thought. Why not open an Etsy shop and see if I can sell a few embroidered shirts or monogrammed blankets?

It was not an instant success but I kept going. Within a few months, I outgrew my little sewing and embroidery machine and bought a bigger embroidery machine. That’s when things picked up for me. Little by little, people would hear that I could make a birthday shirt or add a monogram to a little gift for someone.

We’ve moved several times since I bought that first machine and I’ve upgraded my machine again but something was still missing. During the pandemic, I thought I’d try my hand at a website. From there, I have grown from just monogramming little girls’ clothes and blankets to add a fabulous line of women’s clothing.

I’ve studied the fashion trends in my area and talked to people about what they are looking for. I set up every single weekend at a different event and sell my vision to the lovely people in San Antonio.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It was not an easy road. Moving constantly with the military was always a challenge when it came to restarting my business. But each time I did, I gained a new following of people and made it work.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am very proud to say that in everything I do, I have taught myself.

Embroidery has become a passion. I just love the unique detail it adds to a piece of clothing, bag, or blanket. I love combing over wholesalers looking for women’s and children’s clothing and envisioning what a monogram would look like on each piece.

Finding the perfect accessories is another piece of the pie that gets me excited.

What are your plans for the future?
I would love to open a brick-and-mortar boutique one day! I suppose that is my ultimate goal. In the meantime, I’m happy traveling around and offering my selection to the city.
