Today we’d like to introduce you to Chelsy Cardona.
Hi Chelsy, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today.
My name is Chelsy Cardona. I am the owner of Chelsy’s Beauty Body & Nail Studio located in San Antonio, TX.
This December will be 8 years of being a Manicurist with 3 years providing lash extensions, 2 years providing noninvasive BBL and Body Sculpting, 1 year of hyaluronic pen lip filler, fat dissolver, and booty filler, 1 year of teaching classes, and 6 months of teeth whitening and teeth gems.
I’ve always wanted my own salon since I was little but didn’t have the support of my family. I was told by my parents I would never make it in the salon business. My dad wanted me to go into the medical field. After I graduated high school in 2004, I went to college to pursue a career in becoming a surgical technician but after 6 months I dropped out of college. That field was not for me.
My attendance in that field was only to please my parents but I came to realize, that this is my life and not my parent’s. I need to do what I want to do in life and what makes me happy. Therefore, I decided to attend a vocational school in Business to learn the skills that I will be utilizing in my own business one day. After graduation from that school, the school Director asked me to work for them as a Financial Aid Officer.
I worked in that field for 6 years for 3 different schools. I worked my way up to become a Financial Aid Assistant Director. I was laid off from my job in 2013. My husband and mother-in-law encouraged me to go back to school for what I’ve always wanted to do in life. My mother-in-law offered to assist me with childcare for my two children. I took her advice and proceeded with my goal.
Dec 2014, I graduated with my Manicure License. After graduating I had to teach myself what I didn’t learn in school. I worked for a nail salon for two weeks. I specialize in acrylic nails but the salon I worked for did not want me doing acrylics. The owner informed me, that they did not want me to take their clients so they had me servicing pedicure and shellac manicure clients only.
Therefore, I quit. I went on to rent a room at another salon. I didn’t have clients but I still paid for a room because I didn’t want anyone telling me what to do, what times I should be there, what time I had to leave, and what clients and services to take and not to take. I worked in that salon for 2 years but as I started gaining clientele, the salon owner continuously increased my rent.
She did not want to see me succeed. I figured, if I’m going to pay $850 a month for a tiny room, I might as well open my own salon. So that’s what I did! That salon owner told me what my parents told me. “You’re never going to make it” those words always push me to keep working harder and prove people wrong. I had my own salon located off Bandera and Eckhert for 2 years.
During that time my mom became sick. From one day to the next she had to have emergency open heart surgery. Due to her surgery, her kidneys failed which caused her to be on dialysis. My dad was bedridden, therefore, I had to become her caretaker. She moved in with me so I converted my garage into a home salon. I’ve been located at home for 4 years now. I LOVE working from home.
I go by appointment only so that makes scheduling clients so much easier. Since being home, I furthered my education and got my certificate of completion in lash extensions, noninvasive BBL, noninvasive body sculpting, hyaluron pen for lip filler, fat dissolver and booty filler, teeth whitening, and teeth gems.
I also offer classes and teach my skills to those who are interested in learning and becoming their own boss. I plan on opening another business in the future and training my children in becoming their own bosses as well. With the Lord’s blessing, I will continue to push myself as a successful entrepreneur and accomplishment as much as I can.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way? Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
No, it hasn’t. In the beginning, like all businesses, I struggled financially and became better at what I do.
I prayed every day for the Lord to bless my hands with the skills and talent of becoming a great nail technician.
When Covid hit, I lost a few clients as well and had to build up again.
As you know, we’re big fans of you and your work. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about what you do?
I am a licensed Manicurist in the state of Texas. I also perform lip fillers, fat dissolved, and booty fillers with the hyaluron pen. I do teeth whitening and teeth gems as well as lash extensions. I also offer classes as well.
I specialize in acrylic nails. I love working on long jeweled/3D acrylic nails.
I’m known for my artistic nails but also known for helping men and women feel beautiful and confident about themselves not only with their nails but with the way their body looks and feels along with their smiles.
I’m most proud of being blessed for becoming my own boss, being myself, being a go-getter, being my own motivator, and pushing myself no matter what negativity is around me.
What sets me apart from others is my ambition to push myself further and become more successful in my business.
What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is the clients God has blessed me with and how beautiful and excited they feel leaving my salon and teaching others in becoming their own bosses.
If it wasn’t for God blessing me with my clients, and for my clients returning and choosing me to perform my services, I wouldn’t be successful in what I have today.
