Life & Work with Kristy Talbot

Today we’d like to introduce you to Kristy Talbot.

Hi Kristy, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I came to San Antonio from my hometown of Corpus Christi in 2008 to complete my business degree at the University of the Incarnate Word. Upon completing my degree in 2011, I was on the job search but unsure of what I wanted to do with my new degree. In the interim, I decided to work a part-time job at a local tanning salon and eventually worked my way to becoming the company’s district manager. I felt that this was a relatively good approach to balance my interests in learning about the logistics of operating a business and my affinity for health, fashion, and beauty. Some may say that tanning is a questionable ‘healthy’ beauty treatment but I was attracted to the overlooked artistry of tanning and more so, the confidence and sense of heightened esteem clients appeared to experience with their new glow.

By 2018 I was married and had my daughter who is now four and half years of age. Instantly, I felt compelled to dedicate my attention, time, and love to my daughter. I made a difficult decision to leave a place of employment and an industry I had grown to be quite fond of, but my drive shifted to that of being a mom. Nearly five years later, I felt that desire to pursue my business goals rekindle. While I wanted to do something for myself, to prove to myself I could succeed as an entrepreneur and independent businesswoman, I want to be that role model for my daughter as someone who follows their passion, executes the benefits of college education, and can be successful in my own right. Mom is the most important part of my identity, but I know it is important for all of us to have a sense of identity that’s not just in relation to another person – mom, wife, or daughter.

While the venture is both exciting and scary, with those competing fears of both success and failure, I have a drive and motivation that tells me success is the only option and an inevitability. To see it is to believe it, and aside from my belief in myself, I have a village of family and friends who share that belief in me which only fuels the motivation and belief that entrepreneurial success is the only option.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
No road is ever enjoyable to drive on if it’s completely without bumps, twists, and turns. Predictability is great, but a successful outcome in the absence of predictability brings a little something extra. Bumps came along in various manifestations. Learning to navigate my role as a first-time mom. Loss of autonomy and freedom that comes with a 24/7 parenting role.

Decreased time and opportunities to enjoy more frivolous, social excursions. And even the financial challenges that come with being a stay-at-home mom are compounded by the undeniable expense of having a child. However, those bumps shaped me into a mom I am proud to be, a wife my husband knows he is lucky to have – even if he may not want to admit it, and ultimately led me back to this entrepreneurial beginning.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
On the surface, the work is airbrush or spray tanning. However, for those who do the work, there is an artistry that comes with ‘painting’ people into the most glowing versions of themselves. Whether it’s the motion of the spraying, traversing the contours of all different body types, or determining the ideal color optimal for each individual client, it takes practice, patience, and passion. I am most proud of my risk to start this business, but the greatest joy is twofold – seeing the joy in my daughter’s face as she gets to play ‘assistant,’ and seeing the confidence in clients’ faces as bronzing can often be emboldening.

I hope what sets me apart from others doing similar work is my appreciation for the vulnerability clients’ often experience when they ‘bare it all.’ Our naked self is our most beautiful self and often our most vulnerable and insecure self. Understanding that this business is more than just building a client base and becoming financially sustainable is vital to foster an environment where the most confidence and the most insecure individuals can all come in and leave feeling empowered and beautiful.

Alright so before we go can you talk to us a bit about how people can work with you, collaborate with you or support you?
Even independent business people need villages and networks. The most valuable form of support is having people believe in my potential for success in the way that I do.

I see airbrush tanning as one facet of a myriad of options for beautification, so collaborating with others who provide complementary services in health and beauty allows for a more holistic approach to helping someone feel beautiful.
