Inspiring Conversations with Skylar Moy of SunRae Photography

Today we’d like to introduce you to Skylar Moy.

Hi Skylar, so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
My love for photography began at a young age. My mom gifted me one of those “indestructible” toy digital cameras when I was just 5 years old, and it all started from there.

About 13 years later, I was due for a camera upgrade LOL. I got my very first “professional camera,” a Canon EOS, and I’ve had a hard time putting it down since.

It started off as a hobby, taking pictures of my family and friends and the scenery of the places I visited, but it soon turned into much more. I saw how people were reacting to my work, and it gave me the confidence to start my own business. From there, “SunRae Photography” was born.

Photography was, and will always be my favorite hobby. I enjoy photography because it has given me the opportunity to share in people’s most special moments on a regular basis. Photography is a beautiful experience and connection.

Not only do I have the opportunity to provide a memorable experience, but I also get to connect with people in a fun way.

Ultimately, for me, it’s all about the process. I love the process of putting together the perfect photos. There’s much more to a photo session that the shoot itself. I find joy in editing, using my creativity, picking out the best images, and bringing the image to life.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road for me hasn’t been the smoothest.

Photography requires you to step outside your comfort zone more times than you would think. It’s nerve-racking capturing someone’s special, once-in-a-lifetime moments.

You only get one chance to get it right. With time, however, and after gaining experience little by little, it becomes second nature to you, and those nerves slowly disappear.

We’ve been impressed with SunRae Photography, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I specialize in a mixture of Lifestyle and Portrait photography. I think every session needs a good balance between the two. Portrait photography allows me to get the staged, professional images the client is looking for while lifestyle adds some personality and fun to the session.

I personally thrive in shooting outdoors, you can’t beat the look of natural lighting in photos. I feel like the aspect that sets me apart from other photographers is that I don’t have a specific “theme” when it comes to editing my photos.

I believe every client is different and because of this, I edit their photos based on the overall vibe of the person, background, and overall atmosphere of the shoot. This does make editing for me very time-consuming but it’s 100% worth it.

I can spot a fake smile from a mile away so I make it my mission to put a genuine smile on every client(s) face, even if that means telling a dad joke or two! (Haha).

We all have different ways of looking at and defining success. How do you define success?
To me, I feel successful when I deliver work I am proud of.

Specifically, one of my favorite aspects of this job is walking into a client’s home and seeing my photos hanging on their wall or getting a card delivered with the images I took on it.

Even seeing people post my images on their personal social media makes me feel successful. I feel appreciated and successful knowing I gave them “physical memories” they can cherish for a lifetime.

  • Pricing depends on the type of session you are looking for but an estimate I like to tell people so they have an idea is around $100-$125 an hour.
