Today we’d like to introduce you to Mark Black.
Hi Mark, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
In 1999, my Mother and father-in-law were called to restart a failing Christian Retreat center. They poured themselves out for 20 years. Hosting groups all year during weekends and a full camp schedule in the summer. My family would come out to help on weekends and holidays eventually building our home and moving here in 2008. Since then, the elders have stepped back and my wife and I assumed directorship. We currently serve 2100 guests a year and expecting more this year. God has truly blessed us.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Older facilities always present challenges. We have been able to construct a chapel, pavilion, and our Mission facility; almost exclusively on fees alone.
Covid attempted to shut us down. We did not accept that and we’re able to endure until things were safe.
As you know, we’re big fans of El Shaddai Retreat Center . For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are a fully non-profit, non-denominational, Christian retreat center. We can house 200 at our 23 acre facility. Lovely oak trees adorn the property with a pool, pond, activities, and challenge course. We follow our retreatant group schedule and serve wonderful meals.
What matters most to you? Why?
Being able to provide an environment where people can come a draw nearer to the Lord.
