Hi, my name is Justice Harker. I’m originally from Fredericton, New Brunswick, Canada, and now I’m based in San Antonio, Texas.
BrandShyp didn’t start in an office—it started on the road.
In the spring of 2024, I was planning a group hiking trip to Yellowstone. Shenali, who had always dreamed of starting a boutique digital marketing and IT agency, joined at the last minute. Flights were sky-high, so I canceled my own and we drove all the way from Austin—over 1,400 miles and more than 22 hours one way.
Somewhere in Utah, surrounded by red rocks and running on almost no sleep, she shared her dream. She came from Sri Lanka with experience working for major global brands, and I had studied IT at the University of Texas at Austin and was running a successful startup at the time—it was already a lot to juggle.
Honestly, I was full of doubt. I immediately thought it might be a terrible idea. I’d tried something similar in Austin in 2023 as a business development consultant, and it had failed miserably. On top of that, my startup was already taking everything I had.
But something about that conversation clicked. I realized I wanted to be part of creating an agency that actually helps businesses grow—with strategy, clarity, and execution—not just flashy marketing.
So I dove in. We started BrandShyp from scratch. No shortcuts, no perfect timing—just showing up, putting in the work, and figuring it out along the way, one client at a time.
Today, BrandShyp reflects my journey: messy, real, and fueled by purpose. It’s about helping brands move forward—and proving that taking the leap, even when it’s scary, is always worth it.
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Starting BrandShyp meant stepping into something completely new while juggling other responsibilities—I already had a successful startup at the time, so taking on another venture felt like biting off more than I could chew. There were moments of doubt, especially because I’d tried something similar in Austin in 2023 as a business development consultant and failed miserably.
Getting the agency off the ground meant long hours, learning new systems on the fly, and figuring out how to deliver real results for clients without a blueprint. There were plenty of times I questioned whether it was the right move, whether I could handle it all, or if we were making a mistake.
But those challenges also shaped BrandShyp. They forced us to be creative, resilient, and resourceful. Every mistake became a lesson, and every obstacle pushed us to refine our approach and work smarter. The struggles didn’t stop us—they made us stronger.
