Exploring Life & Business with Janessa Sullivan of Doubleside Toffee

Today we’d like to introduce you to Janessa Sullivan.

Hi Janessa, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I started Doubleside Toffee Company in 2017 from my home kitchen. The past couple of years had been really difficult and I was trying to figure out my purpose. I decided to trust that God gave me a passion for cooking and a desire for business for a reason. I started by giving out samples to friends and neighbors and had an overwhelming response in the first few months.

Everyone said it was the best toffee they had ever had. Some didn’t know what toffee was but now it was their favorite treat. As a result of increasing demand, I moved into a commercial kitchen, added products, moved into stores around San Antonio, and hired employees.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It’s been a long and exhausting but exciting journey. I’ve struggled to keep up with demand during the holidays and to keep revenue up for the rest of the year. As a mom of 4 young kids, trying to balance running a business with full-time mom duties is hard.

For years I’ve had a baby with me at markets, nursing while running my booth. Mostly, I am still learning to take chances, move past failures, and allow God to work through me as I trust in Him.

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Doubleside Toffee Co?
We craft handmade treats that taste good and do good through donations to local, faith-based non-profits. Once you taste our gluten-free toffees, toffee popcorn, and savory almonds, you will be hooked. Our toffee has the perfect crunch– it’s not too hard or chewy.

Doubleside doesn’t only stand for the double coating of chocolate on our toffee- it also stands for the double goodness our company stands for: a treat for the recipient and a donation to help others. Currently, we partner with FOR HER and Young Life. FOR HER works to foster dignity & grow equity for women at risk in San Antonio, Texas, especially those who have been sexually exploited.

Young Life is dedicated to sharing the truth of God’s love with middle and high school students. We hope that as we grow we can continue to support more organizations and be a small part in changing lives.

What do you like best about our city? What do you like least?
I am a native Texan but never imagined living in San Antonio. Turns out, I love this city. I love the small-town feel. I love how our city welcomes and supports small businesses and the variety of people I have met at markets, events, and activities around town.

Pricing:

  • $8.95 – $23.95
